Do you know, I found Fabiens comment about learning Spanish killing his English very interesting. I thought that I was the only one with that problem. When I moved to Spain my French was fairly fluent and my Spanish was zilch. Luckily I found an old farmer in the village who spoke both French and Spanish, so my daughter and I would speak French, that was translated into Spanish, then translated back again, and so we had conversations with the other farmers in the village. Gradually we found ourselves answering in Spanish, and as that happened our French just seemed to disappear!!!

So, a question to all you language teachers out there......... is this a normal phenomononmoonnnon Big Grin

Hey smooz & madsue...

That will happen. As you attain an advanced level of Spanish, you will lose the thrid language (in your cases English for Fabien and French for madsue) since you are out of practice.

This is normal.

It comes back doesn't it???? Is it not possible to speak three or more languages well? What's going to happen to poor me in Amsterdam, I'll have to learn dutch, I mean it's pretty pathetic to live in a country and not bother to learn the language. Will I lose my spanish, or will it come back if I go back to spain, which I will do, probably make several trips thoroughout the year as it's less than 200 euros a flight. May have to get involved in an intercambio in Amsterdam.
Salud,
Nanny

I always say that speaking a language is like riding a bike. If you dont do it continually you will get a little rusty. However, once you begin to practice again, it will come back.

Fabien, I know someone who is looking for economical French classes. If you are interested, drop me an email.

Uy ! cmo est el patio de animado chicos ...

I confirm ! I confirm !
I don't know if the bicycle example was the best one (sorry: I'm french Roll Eyes ) because you never fall again from the bicycle ...

But you do not flush your second language just because your learn a third one, right. The main problem is this bloody confusion you face with when u have 2 (muy) similar words in 2 languages that don't work AT ALL in the third. You are underattacked by a kind of on the fly copy/paste brain process that totally ruins your sentences.

But everything can be solved with a couple of books and loads of beer I think.

See you !

Fabien
