In my high school freshman class yesterday someone asked me about alma and we went thru a bunch of words that are feminine, but use masculine articles...they were the ones bringing up the topic because they had just heard the David Bisbal song Buler�a, which had captivated them and they heard the expression "Buler�a, buler�a tan dentro del alma m� a ...I was so impressed that they even noticed this...focusing on grammar instead of the song

hey marcela, teenagers paying attention to grammar  what is this world coming to and a twist on this topic. i find the word "v�ctima" interesting as even if the victim is a male, it is still "la v�ctima". just a coincidence or a sexist comment on the "weaker sex" saludos, jer... (who may just have tore the hell out of the lid on that can-o-worms :jeje:

For the Spanish words ending in "-ma" but having masculine articles, I was taught that they were of Greek origin...but I'm not sure why that would cause the gender/article conflict... el tema el idioma el diagrama el programa el problema el sistema etc. Paul

hey Irene, here in spain "el radio" means, aside from radius, "radio" (the actual aparatus) while "la radio is, as you said, the non-tangible part (what comes out of the radio). saludos, jer...
