I�ve just listened to a documentary about the history of the alphabet (from symbols representing things->syllables->phonemes) and it seems that recent research has uncovered how scribes in Mesopotamia actually learned their craft (there being hundreds of symbols to memorise).

This methodology might not be welcomed by modern students of English. You start by learning all the symbols for things made of wood and names of trees, then stone, then metal... Stephen
