I am moving to Mallorca in a couple of months and I understand that the language there is Catalan and not Spanish.
I would like to learn at least a few phrases before my trip and I am trying to find some CDs that I can listen to in the car on the way to and from work. I can find tons of material for Spanish but only a CD ROM and a course on cassette for Catalan.
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Iain.

I agree with Jer in that you dont need to know Cataln in order to survive in Mallorca. Probably more German and English speakers than speakers of Mallorquina/Cataln...
There is a website run by the Universitat de Barcelona for those who wish to learn some basic Catal. It includes a phrase book (uses Real Player playback), a short grammar and a vocabulary section. I think this is a good place to pick up the basics before spending any money.
Mallorqu is as Jer said earlier just a dialect of Catal. They like to use 's' adding them whenever possible. I don't recall the exact rules.
Good luck. Cheers,
Ian

I agree with the others, just don't say Mallorqun is equal to Catalan if you don't want to upset a mallorqun. You won't need to learn Mallorquin there as it's very tourist and people are used to many languages. Anyway, if you want to study Catalan just for the fun of it, I heard time ago of an official course called "Digui Digui" (similar to BBC's "Follow me"). Try making a seach with those words. BTW, "Digui" is the word Catalans use to answer the phone.

Thanks for the advice. I am hoping to learn a little just to let the locals know that I am trying, and not the typical tourist that feels shouting loudly in English, with an "o" at the end is the best way to communicate.
