Has anyone, or does anyone know anyone who has done the costal route of the Camino? Today I was talking to one of my best friends and somehow we came to the decision that for our birthdays next year we're going to do the Camino de Santiago starting in her village near Santander. Since there is a lesser-travelled route that goes through the city, the most logical place to start would probably be there. I've already searched the board and begun to look up the sources suggested, but they're all about the more popular routes.

Any suggestions on where to start searching and also, for those who were seasoned hikers before (and neither of us is!), how did you get ready for the trip?

We're aiming to start the first week of May 2005.

hola Mel:
The Confraternity of St. James in London has just such a guide, I believe. They are very complete and portable; you can order them from their very complete website which is easily found.
I recall the coastal route is a tough go because of the rugged topography and the almost-total lack of yellow arrows marking the path. An acquaintance tried walking it last year and gave up and took a bus down to the "main" Camino Frances after wandering around lost for hours.
Not that you shouldn't give it a go -- she's known to get lost in her own neighborhood.
Buen Camino!

You are in for a wonderful adventure!
As for preparing yourself, buy a good pair of Gore-Tex lined hiking boots and start walking NOW. Keep building up your mileage each week till you can do 15 km. or more easy.
Once you settle on which backpack to use, start hiking with it on, too, so you get everything comfortable and broken-in before you start. Expect to do about 20 km. each day, do not over-plan or over-pack, and keep an open mind.
You have lots of time to get into condition, but don't put it off or You Will PAY!
There's lots of websites and books and advice online.

I honestly don't care if we get lost... Like my friend says, "Si nos perdemos, nos perdemos juntas." She's Spanish, I'm fluent so if we get lost, we just ask directions. We're going that route because we both love the north of Spain and would like to get to know it better more than to actually do the camino for a religious or personal purpose. Santiago is just a goal that seems logical since her city is a stop along the way.

I've done a bit of walking in Spain... I wanted to walk the western coast of Cantabria last year but I wasn't able to find a place in Santander the first night I arrived so I just took the bus to my ending point and walked one leg of the trip, but was afraid of getting lost by myself on the other two.

I'll check out the reccomended sites and hopefully be able to get my friend into shape for it. Next week I'll start having gym access so I'll be able to start right away.

Thanks again!

Melinda
