Hello!

Would it be too much to try and visit El Escorial and Segovia on the same day? Also, is there a way to get from El Escorial and Segovia directly without having to go through Madrid? If two in a day isn't advised then I'll need to decide on one.

Of course you can visit both places in the same day, ricky17.

If you have a car (or rent one), the best thing for you is probably to go to El Escorial in the morning, and then make for Segovia. You dont need to go back to Madrid to go from El Escorial to Segovia. You just need to drive from El Escorial to the A-6 (carretera de Madrid-La Corua) and you need to go in the direction of La Corua (instead to Madrid); cross Guadarrama Tunnel which will lead you to the other side of the mountain range and then, when you get to San Rafael (the first village once you drive out of the tunnel) you have to leave the A-6 and take the highway to Segovia.

It's easy if you take a road map. I think that the trip from El Escorial to Segovia by car would take you at most 1 hour.

I totally agree with Sensis on this one. Do El Escorial in the morning, and then head to Segovia and have a nice lunch of cochinillo asado...spend the afternoon wandering the town and then catch the sunset over the Cathedral. Truly breathtaking.

Slightly different driving instructions, though. They have recently opened the highway connecting Madrid to Segovia....so, as Sensis said, follow the A-6 direction A Corua. Go through the Guadarrama Tunnel and as you reach the exit for San Rafael, you will also see signs for the A-61 (the newly opened highway) and Segovia. Follow the A-61 and you will be in downtown Segovia in 15 minutes. So, really from El Escorial to Segovia, it should take you about a half hour to 45 minutes max. (given that you drive like a Spaniard! Eeker Big Grin )

From what it seems, it doesn't take long to get a decent feel for El Escorial. Is there a way to get from El Escorial to Segovia on public transport?

El Escorial is on the train line to Avila. If you were going to Avila instead of Segovia, it would be pretty easy.

Check this Madrid-Avila schedule and open the details for the "REGIONAL" trains. You will see that they stop in El Escorial.

Anyone know if it's possible to catch a bus from El Escorial to Segovia? The train doesn't run directly between them, you'd have to go back towards Madrid, and get off at Villalba, then catch the train to Segovia.

I've been on a LONG conference call that gave me some time to research this. I made a possible route

(A)
Madrid to El Escorial 08:32 09:43

http://horarios.renfe.es/hir/hjhir030.jsp?&O=MADRI&D=10203&MON='EURO'&ID=s

(B)
El Escorial to Villalba de Guadarrama (back towards Madrid) 16:00 16:12

http://horarios.renfe.es/hir/hjhir030.jsp?&O=MADRI&D=10203&MON='EURO'&ID=s

(C)
Villalba de Guadarrama->Segovia 16:57 17:57

(D)
Segovia->Madrid 20:55 22:49 (last train back)

So, it's possible, but notice how much time you get to spend in Segovia: less than 3 hours...and taking the last bus back instead would buy you only another half-hour in Segovia.

Consider this:
1. Take the 08:32 train to El Escorial as shown above.
2 Instead of taking the 16:00 train to Villalba, take a taxi from El Escorial to the Villalba station in time to catch the 12:57 or 14:57. (If it takes only 12 minutes to get there by train, I can't imagine that the taxi ride could cost very much.) This would give you three or one hours more in Segovia, respectively (but of course, less time at El Escorial).

Bottom line: if you are relying on public transportation, you CAN do it, but the scheduling involved can make it a hassle.
