Hello Funny, I was just thinking of a Kurt Vonnegut quote while I was reading the post, without knowing yours was at the bottom Anyway, I don't think there are many places to stay for that price right in Madrid. You could try youth hostels, but for the price, you don't get much at all, no private bathroom, just a bed. However, you MUST read the Art of Travel by John Gregory. It is available to read online, at no charge by clicking here. I highly recommend reading the whole thing, but if you don't have time, read Chapter 3 about Hostels. It talks about how to get hostels for $2-$10 per night. Ben pbchamp@intercom.net ------------- I never asked to be born in the first place. --Kurt Vonnegut

thanks ben. i'll check it out. i've been working at a very posh youth hostel out here in sacramento for over a year now and the idea of a hostel with a private bathroom cracks me up. i don't expect more than a bed and local toilet, at least for a few days, but of course, i'd like to be a little bit comfortable all the same. looks like i'll have to raise my standards or just lower them, huh? thanks for the vonnegut quote. how's the weather on the shore of MD? it's been a long time since i've been out there...

jetaway, The weather's been exceptionally warm here for winter. We had some days in the 70's (F) recently. But I fear the cold weather is approaching. The warm weather has been great on the heating bill for my greenhouse, though. You should come back and visit sometime, it's great country over here. We live about 10 miles from the Bay Bridge. "the man!"

Hi jetaway, jer here. Well, I have an American friend here who moved from Barcelona to Madrid. He has been living in a hostel on the Calle Montera (Madrid's red light district but pretty safe since it is in the dead center of the city) for 4 months now! He does not want to live with anyone and in my opinion is too darn lazy to look for a place of his own. Anyway, he pays like 1.800 pesetas a night (under $10) but has been there so long he now knows those who run it and gets a special deal. Don't laugh, he even has his own bathroom and TV. I will ask the name of the place and try to get you the info on this thread this week. I am sure their regular prices are not too high and may fall into that $11-$15 range. Saludos, jer... p.d. Hey Ben, thanks for that "Art of Travel" link , good stuff

Hi jetaway and all. Well, I did the investigating and unfortunately it is not as cheap as I had hoped at that hostel my friend is living in As I said, he gets a deal sinc ehe has been there for over 5 months. It is still pretty cheap though. The hostel is called "Hostel Metropol" and is on Calle Montera #47 (as you can see in the photo I took by CLICKING HERE). There are a few other hostals in the building as well but the Metropol is 3.500 pesetas (21.04 euros or about $19 USD) fro a single room with own bathroom and TV. Pretty good price considering. By the way, on a currnt events note, the "ESTAMOS HARTOS" ("WE'RE FED UP") banners hanging on the building in THE PHOTO are due to the massive amount of prostitutes on the Calle Montera (the stret is famed for its "ladies of the evening"). The neighbors are sick of it and put up those signs in protest. In spite of the shadiness of the area, it is pretty safe since it is just about in the dead center of the city and the hostels there are probably the cheapest in the center of Madrid For more on the Hostal Metropol: e-mail: hostalmetropol@infonegocio.com tel.: (+34) 91 521 2935 Saludos, jer...

I've come across a website: http://www.softdoc.es/madrid_guide/accommodation It appears to have exactly what I've been looking for: youth hostels (dorm style or with cheaper private rooms and shared bathrooms). It also list pensions, and the whole array of hotels and also camping sites. There are links and it's divided by neighborhoods in Madrid. I was wondering if any of you out there have either used this website and/or stayed at any of the hostels listed. I'd love it if someone will take a look and tell me if any of them jump out as places I should NOT stay. I'll probably be going this route in order to meet people and also to save some cash. Any help is much appreciated. Thanks! Jill
