I'll be studying in Salamanca this summer and wanted to know if I'll be able to use the local ATM machines. My ATM card is not one of the VISA check cards. However, it does show the Plus symbol on the back. A litte Internet search I did showed many ATM machines that honor the PLUS system. But, I wanted to know if anyone had first-hand experience using a regular old ATM card.

THanks!!

I think in order for your ATM to work overseas the money has to be coming from a checking account. I don't think it necessarily has to be a debit carad. I know someone who had trouble with a bank of america card. This person could only withdraw money from a deutchse bank ATM. On the other hand, I have a checking account at a small local bank, and it worked just fine at any ATM I tried. My card also has the plus symbol. I think your best bet would be to contact your bank and make sure that it will work. Goodluck! I lived in Salamanca once, it was nice. Take advantage of learning about the history while you're there.

Hi bludane928, welcome to the baord.

As amapola612 said, to be sure, check with your bank.

When I was studying here many moons ago, I had an ATM card from a small bank back in the U.S.A. and it had the cirrus and plus, etc... systems but for some reason would only work at Barclays bank. Problem was that it only worked at 1 (sometimes at a second) branch in Madrid (I tried MANY). It was linked to a savings account and not a checking account so maybe amapola says about having it linked to a checking account makes sense.

How long will you be here bludane??? I ask because another option is to open a bank account at a Spanish bank and make life a lot easier for yourself.

transfer your money into a Spanish bank account!!! I usually have no problem, but I have a friend from Canada and like Jer she can only get money out of one bank, some of the time, and only 20e each time...if at all. I usually have no problems, but my bank BofA charges me $3 each time I use an ATM. If you can get a Spanish bank account, DO IT!!! Also if you lose you wallet or credit cards you can just go to the bank and show them your statements and you can get your money, if you have an american bank, youhave to wait until your parents Fed Ex you your credit cards (took me 3 weeks and i had to live off of 60euros).

Can anyone help me here. I have a Spanish ATM card, drawn on Banco Santander. Its a 4B debit card. I have used it in the States with no problem, but had a job finding any bank in the UK who would accept it. In fact the only machine I found was in a garage forecourt in a tiny town in Suffolk!!!! I am off to Ireland for a holiday next week, and wonder if there is anyone who can tell me if any ATM machines will accept it? I have asked Banco Santander and they say, yes of course, no problem, but cant tell me any particular bank which will accept my card. It will be a frugal holiday if I cant draw my money!!!!!!!! Confused

Oh yes Sue, I have one that will work with that card.

It is the "O'Patty's Bank" on the corner of that street and that other one in that little town with all those nice people living in it. You know the one, the one with the Irish pub on the corner :jeje:

Sorry to "take the mick (sp?) out of ya" but the damn ATM thing pisses me off too as it seems to have no rhyme or reason to it AT ALL.

Sorry I can't be of more help Frowner

I have credit union ATM cards and have almost never had a problem in Spain and all over Europe, with the exception of Portugal (why, I don't know). Good luck.

Hi! My advice would be that your best bet would be Barclays. Whenever I have a problem with ATM cards not working somewhere, they ALWAYS work in the Barclays machines, I have no idea why, but it always seems to be true for me. Good luck! Let us know! Besos, Joy

Interestingly enough, the one ATM machine that worked for me 100% during my year abroad here as a student waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay back was also a Barclays right by my school (as luck would have it) Cool

It worked at another Barclays near the Plaza del Callao on "Calle Jacometrezo" as well but did not work at quite a few other Barclays branches Confused

As I said, no rhyme nor reason!!!

I have read however that ATM cards linked to checking accounts work FAR better than ATM cards linked only to savings accounts.

Paul, is your credit union ATM linked to a checking or savings account???

Hi all from Naas just outside Dublin!!

I am on my holidays (visiting my daughter) and just to let you know that my Banco Santander debit card is working in all the ATM's here. It's not too keen on being swiped through machines in the department stores, though I must admit I'm not too keen on that too as my daughter is going through the bank balance real quick!!

But I can get cash at any bank showing the Mastercard symbol here, which I couldn't do in the UK.
