I really love my DK Eyewitness guidebook, but I think I'm gonna need something which covers Pais Vasco in some depth. Do you have a bookstore in mind that carries good guidebooks and maps? Some of my guides are so old they don't even have the Guggenheim Museum in 'em!
I figure I can make a quick run and buy what I need, then spend the time aboard the train "studying".

Hi Sue, As a librarian, I purchase quite a few every year, and I have not yet found the Complete Guidebook to Spain. When I planned my trip to Galicia, I did not find the breadth of coverage for Northern Spain as there was for Barcelona, Madrid, Sevilla and Andalucia. In planning my trip I visited Barnes & Noble, Borders, and Books a Million, and looked through all the guides. The best coverage I found was in Lonely Planet amd the Nelles Guide to Spain: the Pyrenees, Atlantic Coast and Central Spain ( ISBN 388618-400-5). The Nelles was full of insightful information. However, both Lonely Planet and Nelles lacked the breadth of info on hotels and restaurants that some of the other guides like Frommers, Fodors, Harvard Students Let's Go Spain guides have. DK is lovely if you are a visual traveler, like my mother, who plans her trips with postcards. She just gives s her travel agent a set of postcards of places and sites she wants to see, and that's how she plans her travel.
Good luck!

Thanks! I think I'd like your mom a lot... I'm sort of looking for guides published in Spain, which might break the regions down better.
OK- I found what might work. ANAYA publishes a guide called "Pais Vasco" in the series "Gua Total" for right around 20 Euros. So, if somebody who lives right there in Madrid knows of a bookstore that has a copy, please let me know!
