Could you recommend what to wear while in salamanca while being a exchange student. It's for my 20 year old son. He doesn't want to stick out like a tourist. Thanks :jeje:

What time of year is he going to be in Salamanca? It can be cold as a welldigger's posterior in winter due to the wind, so if he is going there for the spring semester, he would definitely need a good coat and other warm clothing.

my son will be leaving on January 2nd and staying until the end of April. For some reason my son has never liked any clothes that carry logos on them, so I'm glad to hear that those clothes don't work to well. Thank you so far

Levi's NOT popular in Spain! That's funny!

I wouldn't worry too much about what he should bring. A warm coat for sure, but whatever he normally wears should be fine. You see everything especially on students nowadays. A good store to check out (just for style, I'm not saying go broke buying there!) is Express Men's (Structure).

Docker's style pants is big, along with button down shirts/and sweaters for winter time... and when the weather is warmer, a nice 'polo' (that's what they call golf shirts- its the polo style) or a nice t-shirt...

Make sure he takes a pair of nice leather shoes... also, bars there aren't like the college dive bars in the US, so he doesn't have to worry so much about ruining his shoes. This way he'll have a nice pair of shoes to dress up in.

Dressing and the rules are different for men than they are for women (I'm a woman by the way). In Salamanca, especially where there are SO many students and foreign exchange students (I have friends from there and some who were studying there and I heard more English spoken on the street than Spanish!)...you'll see everything worn.

You're right about the warm-up pants. I was thinking more along the lines of regular clothes, not 'bum' wear (and by this I mean when you don't feel like putting any effort whatsoever and you want to be really comfortable.)

Jenebe, depending on what style your son has, preppy, hippie, grunge or whatever, tell him that to not stick out so much, to get up in the morning, comb his hair and look like he put effort into his look. That should do the trick! (of course if he's already kind of preppy, then its not an issue!) oh! And NO big pants that hang below his butt, or that 3 of him could fit into!

I think people tend to be overly concerned with what to wear, and you're obviously not going to go out and buy a new wardrobe just to visit a foreign country, no matter how long or short you're going to be there. Also, you're going to be more confortable in clothes that are 'you'. I still stand by my original post.

General rule- in Spain people dress up more, own less clothing- using classic basics and mixing them up and accessorizing to make more from the clothes they have. [yin yang]

I was simply responding as a 23 year old male who dresses in Spain. One whose Spanish friends could go down a street and point out a tourist on looks alone. Her son doesn't want to look like a tourist so I tried to help,

And Jenebe...tell him not to wear socks with Sandals.

p.d. Jenebe, I am a bit of a fashion disaster so I really can't advise here. I personally prefer the gtunge look but can tell you however that both Shiloh and espe3 are right. Spaniards do wear Jeans a lot but do not wear them out to clubs, bars, etc... They tend to dress up a lot more here than in the U.S.A. for a night on the town.

Also, except for maybe Sunday mornings at home, the "chandal" (sweatsuit) look is horrible Eeker
