OK. Here is an interesting spin on perritos viajeros. My dog had cancer. He is in remission now and otherwise healthy. His dying wish (or our wish for him) is to visit Spain with his owner at least once. How can we sedate him for the voyage? He is an old dog and prone to estar cagado de miedo during a wierd thing such as an airplane flight. He is a pomeranian.

Our vet is completely against sedating animals on plane trips, never mind whether they are young or old.

Please dont take this the wrong way, but why would you want to put an old dog through that type of a journey?

sue, if i were old and decrepit i would love to go through that journey to spain Big Grin

i think it is sweet that GataUSA wants the pooch to see spain Smiler and if sedating will make it more comfortable for the dog, go for it.

i think that one would be best answered by your vet GataUSA.

Sedation can be dangerous for an animal and can certainly disorientate it. Sometimes there is no choice however. Most of the time you will be separated from your pet during travel so it is best the animal is quiet. Believe me - most luggage handling people in the airports have no great love of animals. This is the reason I would never put my dog through the trauma of a flight unless it was absolutely necessary, which in your case I dont think it is.

If you really must. something to think of is using natural remedies to help your pet settle down during and after transport. The Bach flowers are good - rescue remedy is useful all around.

Heres a few links for you to ponder and decide if you really want to put your dog through it:

It is scientifically proven that sedatives can inhibit your dogs ability to regulate its body temperature and also may inhibit its breathing pattern (see the last link).

Saying that, if you go through with it, my dog Jasper would love to meet your dog

OK jer, when you are old and decrepit, Ill hold you to that!!!! Wink Ill take you out of your nice cosy home, stick you in a box, drug you up to the eyeballs, put you on a plane in the hold all by yourself, and send you x number of miles away to a place you couldnt care less about. Red Face

I love my dog and cat dearly, but I am absolutely sure they have no pressing desire to go see another country especially under the above conditions!!!!

:jeje: ummmmmmmm... actually.......maybe :b:

Obviously if people are moving to Spain on a permanent basis, they really do have to bring their pets (just as they do their children Big Grin ). Just dont see the point on bringing an elderly dog who has been quite ill on a holiday to Spain from USA Smiler

sue, i think that is the point of GataUSA's post above.

ok, we need confirmation from GataUSA on this one but frm her posts of late on the board, i got the impression that her plan was to move here for good (or as long as possible), hence the whole "bring the elderly pooch" argument by yours truly.

i am almost positive this is not just a week or 2 holiday for GataUSA since she was just here over the holidays (for a "brief stint") and is coming back to live here. i may be wrong but i thought the late dec./early jan. trip was to scout things out for a move this summer (no? Confused )

i did not mean to imply that she should bring over her pom just for to be a tourist Roll Eyes

I think it's a cute idea. I'm just against the sedation thing for such an old/poorly dog - actually any dog really. Quite a risk to take.

It is entirely up to the owner to assess if the risk is worthwhile. Hopefully the links I provided will let the owner assess the situation and make a more educated decision.

Im sorry too jer, :ks: I really got the impression this was just a trip for the dog to see Spain, not to live here "for ever".

A friend of mine bought a very elderly dog here from UK via Madrid. This was ten years ago, but even then they were advised not to sedate it, especially as it was elderly.

i have a tiny teacup yorkie who will be traveling with me to Spain, as he needs to become more sophisticated and "European". my vet is totally against sedation, and she thinks he will be fine on the 8+ hour journey.
travelers with pets just need to be sure they don't feed or water the pet too much prior to take-off.
i plan on spoiling little Rueben silly once we get to Spain, out of extreme guilt for subjecting him to the torture of a plane ride under a seat in coach. but it must be done.
