And here's a tip for those who like to look before they leap. Google.com is a wonderful search engine which also features images. Therefore, if you choose "images" and enter the names of any cities which interest you, you can get pictures. I concur about the cities mentioned. However, Bilbao has a bit more than just the Guggenheim. It has a good museum on Basque culture and it has a metro system which takes you out to some precious little seaside spots, like Getxo. I understand that there's pretty good surfing along the coast there as well, though perhaps better farther north. Of the two, I'd pick San Sebastian for it's "Belle Epoque" atmosphere, great food, super scenery, and size.

Hi singh. I would have to agree with "pim" above and her route of "Madrid, Barcelona, San Sebastian to the north" but with the addition of Toledo, Segovia and Salamanca for one day each and the minor replacement of Sevilla with Granada in the South While you should hit Segovia & Salamanca on your way North, leave Toledo for a day trip from Madrid at the end of your trip since it is easy to do with Madrid as a jumping off point. If you are doing a Northern route however, you may want to leave Granada out since it is the only truly Southern city on the list. Also, if you have 3 weeks in Spain starting on May 3rd, try to be in Madrid for a few days during the week of May 13th-17th for the chock-full-o-fun SAN ISIDRO FESTIVAL Personally I would skip Bilbao (or just pop in one day for the "Gugie" and then bail out. I agree with totx, Bilboa is not a very attractive city. You may also want to skip Mallorca this time around since it may take up more time than it is worth. Saludos, jer...

Or, to show off my limited Latin: de gustibus non est disputandum(I think that's how it goes) There is no accounting for taste. Never made it to El Escorial and never felt drawn to go. Loved Santiago de Compostela(and would still like to walk there before I die) I've never been to Segovia, either, and would love to see the Alcazar. One of the best things about Spain, to me, is that it has such tremendous geographic diversity from the misty shores of Galicia to the parched plains of La Mancha to the varied mountain ranges. What a place! A diverse and rich influx of invaders, too, all of whom left their mark and added to the fascination. Darn! Now I feel kind of "homesick"

i would do madrid, san sebastian, barcelona then granada, puerto banus & ben-almadena, sevilla. this is why: madrid & barcelona because they are political and financial capitals respectively and as such are must-dos. san sebastian is THE most elegant, chicest city in spain. granada is like something out of 1001 nights...the alhambra is consistently the top architectural pick for most beautiful building in the world. apart from the alhambra its simply a gorgeous city. puerto banus & ben-almadena are examples of jet-setting opulence..i love it!! sevilla is also in my opinion the romantic heart of spain. its like falling in love all over again..just that its with a city and not a person. in the spring the streets smell of orange blossoms and the light is awe inspiring in the old quarter..it lights all of the buildings like they are on fire. if you make sevilla your last choice you can just AVE it up to madrid again. whatever you choose to do/see have a great time!!

forget about Bilbao, its not worth spending your precious time there, its so dull...San Sebastian its out of this world. Elegant and its Belle Epoque character, youll love it. And too close to San Sebastin (locals call their city Donosti) theres the small village of Hondarribia, quaint and charming, its a real Basque village, from there you can get France by small boats, every 30 minutes,(its just crossing the river)and visiting Biarritz another Belle Epoque city but this one in France. You can get more info at www.hondarribia.com

San Sebastin = one of the most beautiful cities on the face of the earth! Thanks for the Hondarribia (A.K.A. Fuenterrabia) link binko, I was there years ago and found it interesting to see Franc on the other side of the bay as we were soaking in the rays at the beach It seemd like you could almost throw a stone across and hear a Frenchman yell "ouch" (or the equivalent in French ) Saludos, jer...
