Hello all,

I just spoke to Citibank and they assured me that ATM withdrawls go unpenalized. If your money is in a US citibank and ur in Madrid and you make ATM withdrawls there are no fees, or commissions. This is very much unlike Chase who charges a 3.00$ foreign ATM withdrawl fee. Yes I know there are no Chase branches in Madrid but still 3$ is 3$.

Thanks, Miguel - Regarding Citibank, I'm told that you are able to withdraw up to $2000.00 per DAY! Without penalty. I think this is the way we will go when we arrive next week. (unless we find otherwise)

OK, we seem to have a lot of Citibank/Citicorp questions. If anyone wants to/can post a concise "list of demands" for them that I can 'cut & paste' into an email I may be able to help, because I'm currently teaching English in Citibank HQ here in Madrid. My students will probably know the best person to ask questions of, so fire away! Straight from the horse's mouth and all that. It will be worth their while - after all, they may get new clients as a result.

Maybe I am missing something here.

I have read all posts on this thread. I have travelers' checks. Can I open an account with them? That question wasn't answered on the board here.

Joy, did you use travelers' checks or cash?

Thanks,

Shawn

Of course you can Shawn.

Travellers checks are money and while not widely accepted except at big stores and such, they are always welcome at banks and not only that but you will get a better exchange rate than if you bring cash.

Adrian,
First off, Thanks so much for your offer to help! Smiler I'm going to take you up on it!

Ok. Lets see- opening an account (resident) with dollars, what is the best way to go? Cash, Cashier's check or Money order, or a regular personal check from your bank in the US.

Also, what is the comission rate they charge you and do they give you what the standard exchange rate is or below it because of comissions.

For future transactions once the account has been established: How much if any comission do they charge you to deposit checks in American Currency?

What is there regular comission (again, if any) do they charge you if you simply want to exchange money (for ie: US dollars to Euros) if you have an account with them?

Are there any monthly charges to have an account opened with them?

Thank you berry muchas! Smiler

Adrian - you are a real find (God bless the internet, and networks in general)

My question is very general: I already have a Citibank account in the U.S.

1. With Citibank branches in Madrid, what am entitled to, if anything. Do I have full access to my funds? How much money can be withdrawn and what are the charges for these withdrawls? What services would I have access to? Money orders? etc.

2. Would it be a better strategy to open a new account in Euros? Could this be done simply from my existing american Citibank bank account? Again, would there be a charge to transfer money to fund this new account? Should I get a local (madrid) bank card/credit card? or would my american atm and visa card suffice?

From my perspective - I haven't left America, yet - these are the only questions I have - I'm sure I'll have some others, once I've been in Madrid for a little while - Thanks so much - any info you can offer would be very helpful.

Tony

I will be moving to Madrid for about a year and am in the same banking situation. I have some additional questions:

1) Would it be just as easy for me to use Citibank checks issued in New York as in Madrid? or should I order checks from the Citibank office in Madrid?

2) If I am in Madrid and want to transfer funds or something would I be able to access them from the Madrid branch or would I have to call New York again? In other words, is ATM usage the only tangible access you have to your Citibank DOLLARS once you are in Madrid.

Thanks a million,

Mikey

Hey Mike, I htink I can field those...

1) Get checks here from a Madrid branch, nothing scares people here more than a foreign check Eeker Eeker Eeker (even if it is from the same bank).

Also, get used to paying with your credit card here, checks are not commonly used for everyday stuff in Spain but plastic is GOD!!!

2) Not sure I understand the question. In theory and from what people have said about Citibank here on this thread, an account is an account. If you are referring to wiring from a Citibank $$$ account to a Citibank account, I think Citibank has online virtual banking to do this, no Confused
