Ah well. At least it's good to have definitive word on the subject. For those wishing to get more info on getting the so-called certificado, I've posted a summary of my experiences at the comisara today over in this thread.

hey Kendo, if you read the posts by grantc and Nava above, you will see that you need nothing sepcial. last i knew, at la caixa they needed the letter of non-residency. next time i am at my bank i will ask again in light of what Nava and grant have posted. maybe valladolid has different norms but Nava is in madrid and said she opened an account at "bankinter", maybe you should find out from her what branch (address) she did this at although the policy should be uniform for all of the branches. saludos, jer...

Kendo- most if not all banks welcome new accounts being opened by Non Residents in Spain. You will have an account that is a 'No Residente' account but can get a cheque book and a Debit card with probably the proviso that you keep a minimum balance in the account -maybe Euros 600 or something. I opened an account with HALIFAX because I thought that easier transfer of Sterling into Euros was going to be a lot simple. So with a Halifax UK account I can transfer monies into the Halifax Spain account using the phone and the cost is zero. They recently started Internet Banking so you can check your balances or pay into another bank account. For other information about what they offer look at www.halifax.esFor some Spanish banks you can use their International office and open an account before you come to Spain. Just look on their web sites for a contact office or email. Or email or phone them direct for the papers. You will be asked to sign a one page "Non Residence Declaration" form to confirm that you are Non Resident.

Just an update-having followed this whole thread, I was prepared to go and spend the day at General Pardinas requesting letter of non residency for the bank account, then going back in 10 days and, ultimately, after about three weeks of effort, finally opening a nonresident bank account. I had put this off as one more bureaucratic headache that I would deal with later. Luckily, I ran into Juliette, who recommended Jer's La Caixa (C/Arenal)and said that they are still not making a big deal about this letter. She said they had just helped another mmer with this a few weeks ago. She suggested I speak to Cristina. And sure enough-it was no problem at all! Actually it was Carmen who helped me-but it was no big deal-took about 20 minutes-she didn't even require that I put money in the account! Super easy-no bureaucratic nightmare. All I needed was a passport! Thanks Juliette!

Chad, I'd avoid the hassle (and the massive lineup) if I were you, and find a bank that doesn't insist on the certificate of 'non-resedencia'. La Caixa on Calle Sagasta let me open an account with fifty Euros and just my passport for ID. No letter required, and I even got a VISA card with a photo of Cibeles fountain on it. How cool is that? Cheers, Steve
