I thought you might want to know i was able to open two non-resident accounts in Valladolid at the beginning of this month with out any letter from the police. I don't know if it makes any difference but I am an EU national.

Should any one be interested the banks were CitiBank and Caja Laboral. All i needed to do was sign a govenment finance form stating i was a non-resident. The form was different for both banks.

regards

grant

Jer,

Iam coming to Madrid late March early April, I would appreciate it so much if you could try and find out what documents I will need to open a non residents account, Iam a eu citizen with full british passport, and if have a an amount of cash in Euros would I be able to deposit it in the account on my first day.

I will go to the branch that you use of La Caixa.

Thanks in advance !!!

hey Kendo, if you read the posts by grantc and Nava above, you will see that you need nothing sepcial.

last i knew, at la caixa they needed the letter of non-residency. next time i am at my bank i will ask again in light of what Nava and grant have posted.

maybe valladolid has different norms but Nava is in madrid and said she opened an account at "bankinter", maybe you should find out from her what branch (address) she did this at although the policy should be uniform for all of the branches.

saludos,
jer...

hey Kendo, grantc (see 6 posts up) is also an eu citizen.

i'm pretty sure a non-resident is a non-resident no matter where they are from.

i will ask at my bank if anything has changed in policy.

Kendo- most if not all banks welcome new accounts being opened by Non Residents in Spain. You will have an account that is a 'No Residente' account but can get a cheque book and a Debit card with probably the proviso that you keep a minimum balance in the account -maybe Euros 600 or something.
I opened an account with HALIFAX because I thought that easier transfer of Sterling into Euros was going to be a lot simple. So with a Halifax UK account I can transfer monies into the Halifax Spain account using the phone and the cost is zero. They recently started Internet Banking so you can check your balances or pay into another bank account. For other information about what they offer look at www.halifax.es
For some Spanish banks you can use their International office and open an account before you come to Spain. Just look on their web sites for a contact office or email. Or email or phone them direct for the papers.
You will be asked to sign a one page "Non Residence Declaration" form to confirm that you are Non Resident.

Hi All,

I'm getting ready to move to Spain at the end of July. The majority of this information dates from a couple of years ago.

Regarding banking, am I to assume the following:
- A non-resident can open account in Spain and they may or may not need proof of non-residency depending on the bank. A nice appearance will help ease the process while trying to open an account.

Question: A couple post above mentioned that you can open a bank account from your current location (USA for me). Any advice on which banks offer this? Do you receive an ATM card before you leave or do you pick it up when you arrive?

If there are any updates on banking in general, please let everyone know.

Thanks!!

Just an update-having followed this whole thread, I was prepared to go and spend the day at General Pardinas requesting letter of non residency for the bank account, then going back in 10 days and, ultimately, after about three weeks of effort, finally opening a nonresident bank account. I had put this off as one more bureaucratic headache that I would deal with later. mad

Luckily, I ran into Juliette, kiss who recommended Jer's La Caixa (C/Arenal)and said that they are still not making a big deal about this letter. She said they had just helped another mmer with this a few weeks ago. She suggested I speak to Cristina. And sure enough-it was no problem at all! big grin Actually it was Carmen who helped me-but it was no big deal-took about 20 minutes-she didn't even require that I put money in the account! Super easy-no bureaucratic nightmare. All I needed was a passport! Thanks Juliette! brews

Hello. I've recently arrived in Madrid and need to open a bank account. I'm going to try to open one without the letter; however, in the event that they do ask does anyone know the address or neighborhood in which the police station is to get the letter?

Thanks,

Chad

hey Chad, welcome, ya finally made it brews

as me tioned on this thread, the police station in question is on "general pardiñas".

do a SEARCH for "general pardinas" (withut the "ñ" or it wont get results), you will find the exact address in more than one of the resulting threads.

i will post it here if i find it first.

Chad, I'd avoid the hassle (and the massive lineup) if I were you, and find a bank that doesn't insist on the certificate of 'non-resedencia'.

La Caixa on Calle Sagasta let me open an account with fifty Euros and just my passport for ID. No letter required, and I even got a VISA card with a photo of Cibeles fountain on it. How cool is that?

Cheers,
Steve
