Actually the banks are having a price war at the moment. One of the best-sounding offers is that of ING Direct www.ingdirect.es, which is internet only, though there´s an office on C/José Ortega y Gasset in Madrid. You have to domiciliar your nómina (pay your salary in directly), and everything is free, including all outgoing transfers in euros within the EU, maintenance, debit card. The current account is a new thing for ING, it used to be savings accounts only. I intend to change to them, I just don´t have a nómina at the moment. Of course if you work for yourself then you´d need something different. Stephen

With ING questions: If it´s internet only, here do you use your bank card to take out cash? Do you just use any bank machine? If so, is it still commission free?

great update - i went to the La Caixa branch on C/ Arenal this morning to open a No Residente account, and I did it, easy as pie!! They did not ask for the Carta de No Residente! YIPPEEE! Thanks for the great recommendation Jer. I know there was some talk about "appearances" on this thread for walking into the bank, and maybe it did help that i was dressed nicely in my business-casual work clothes. p.s. This office actually opens at 8:15am during the week.

I really think this particular branch of La Caixa is special-case in point: this morning I had to go to La Caixa on Mayor AND the one on Arenal to pick up a bank card at each (don't ask). When they gave me the card at Mayor, they told me that the computer was asking for me to fill out the non resident paperwork-that this comes up every six months and it was time to do it. I told them I was on my way to my home bank (Arenal) and would take care of it there (ok, I lied). At Arenal, they handed me my card with no questions, no issues and no interest in my filling out that paperwork!

Hi Everyone! Just wondering if anyone has recently tried to open a non-residents account? Any news to report? I am coming to Madrid in August and I think I will take Jer's advice and head to La Caixa but I was curious if anyone out there has tried this year. Thanks

not true Rob. please be careful about making such statements as it is not so in all cases nor for all banks. you can mislead people that way. saludos, jer...
