Hey There,

I'm moving to Madrid in February & have a possible apartment on Calle Algodonales, near the Tetuan Metro. Does anyone know what this area is like? Is it safe? Anything to do? Places to Shop? Thanks for any info.....

Regards,
Zach

Hi Zach,

I live near there, there are better areas in Madrid but Tetuan area is Ok in my opinion: very near to calle Bravo Murillo and Cuatro Caminos (a lot of commercial shops very cheap), very close to Marques de Viana sunday's market. Near from Chamartin train Station and Plaza de Castilla bus station, safe? a lot of latinamerican living there but quite calm people. I like the north of Madrid more than central or south, I think it is Ok. Good luck!

Salu2,
Angel.

Hi Zach --

Like MadRider I also live near the Tetuan metro. The whole Tetuan district is a very interesting area as it incorporates very upscale living with more middle to low income areas. It all depends on what side of Bravo Murillo you live.

That said I think the area is perfectly safe. Yes, there are many immigrants living in the neighborhood (myself included Wink ) which can be seen as either positive or negative. I choose to see the positive... there is diversity.. not just latin american, but also Asian and African ethnic diveristy. With this diversity brings diversity in shopping options, especially food shopping if you are into cooking. Small shops specializing in Caribbean cuisine, Asian foods, African.. etc.

Many small internet cafs (locutorios) and Bravo Murillo offers a plethora of shopping options as well as several movie theaters, including one on Reina Victoria (Cuatro Caminos) which offers films in original version.

I will say, however, that when I decide to dine out, I usually head for restuarants in the other neighborhoods such as Huertas/La Latina/Gran Va/etc.

Hi! I will soon be an ex-Tetuan area resident. The area is pretty okay and really depends on which side of Bravo Murillo you live. But the area is really, really, really comofortable and convenient. It's good a lot of transport possibilities. Owning a car is not at all necessary in order to get around. Should you need to get home by taxi, it's not expensive at all. You will not lack food nor shopping options. I loved the area. I doubt very much you'll regret living there.

C/ Cactus
