Looking for suggestions and tips on a short stay in Barcelona for Easter weekend, 2003. I will be staying in Barcelona for a little less than a week on Easter weekend before leaving for Italy and am hoping to tour both the city and the Costa Brava up through Figueres. Would it be safe for me to drive or be better to join a tour group of which I know there are many? Places I would like to visit are Montserrat, Gerona, Figueres, and possibly a few resorts along the Costa Brava. Also considering a train trip on Renfe to Gerona instead of automobile or bus. Also want to know what there is to see south of Madrid such as Tarragona? Interested in culture and historical sites.

I never liked tour groups because I like to see the city itself, not necessarily just the tourist destinations. However, if you want to get as much in as possible, I suggest the Bus Turistic.

Montserrat is just friggin awesome, make sure when you go there to see the choir perform.
The train ride to Girona is okay, but not very scenic. I would rent a car once arriving in Girona because a lot of the most interesting places are not in the city itself.

Here's the Timetable for the trip to Monserrat, including both the Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya (FGC) R5 train from Plaza Espanya and the connection at Monserrat-Aeri for the funicular up to the Monestery.

Here is the FGC R5 schedule by itself.

The out of town trip section talks about Montserrat and Girona also go to Figueres to see the Dali museum...it is odd (the outside has eggs on the building), but very cool and very worth the time.
