My wife and I seem to have boxed ourselves in. The plan was to fly to Lisbon, rent a car and drive to Faro for a day, then on to Sevilla, turn in the rental car, AVE to Madrid and back to USA. Now it turns out no company will rent a car in Lisbon for Seville drop-off for less than $2500.

Now it is too late to fly. We could rent and drop the car in Faro, then take the 5 hour bus ride to Sevilla - we're not too excited about that idea.

What is most surprising is that there seems to be no train between Algarve and Sevilla.

Help help help ayudarnos. We don't know what to do.

Gracias!

hi Philip, i vaguely remembered this question being asked in the past on the board so i did a SEARCH on "portugal to spain" and came up with the thread madrid to portugal posted HERE.

have a look at the thread as it discusses the algarve to spain topic.

while the train--> fishing boat --> bus journey (see the thread i mention above) i did many moons ago was quaint, i doubt you will be into that so the bus will be your best option if you don't do the car thang.

saludos,
jer...

I am surprised that it takes 5 hours from Faro to Seville. It takes about that sort of time to take a direct bus from Lisbon to Seville. (see www.rede-expressos.pt ) I am sure that there may be other bus companies doing this route. If you do not have a special reaon for overnighting in Faro then I would skip it. Not really much to see and you may be better off doing the direct travel and getting that journey over with. You can look at www.exploreseville.com and if you need more info about buses from Lisbon send a mail to the web master jeff@exploreseville.com - he likes helping people out.

I checked http://www.rede-expressos.pt for buses from Lisboa to Sevilla. Looks like they have one daily on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday:

Horrios IDA
Dos Expressos entre
LISBOA e SEVILHA (377 kms)

Partida: 08:30 h Chegada: 14:00 h
Preo: 28.25
Mudana de Autocarro:
Frequncia : 3as, 5as, 6as

I don't know if you'd be going on Tuesday, Thursday or Friday, but if you could travel one of those days, it's probably your best option...and beats the heck out of forking over $2500 for the car.

I spotted a bus route that I think is daily that leaves Lisbon at 09.30 and arrives at Seville at 16.45 - take a look at ALSA : http://www.alsa.es/horarios/hor_navega.asp
It seems to cost Euros 35 one way. But does not say which way it runs, but I think it is via Merida in Extramadura. Leaves from Lisbon's SETE RIOS bus station. Don't forget about the hour's difference between Portugal and Spain ! Portugal is always one hour behind Spain. Same as UK. Eeker

Thanks for the good help. We're back. We found that EVA, the national bus service, has two buses a day to Seville. We thought it was 4:20 but with the time change it was only 3:20. Very comfortable and it was a great way to see 4 towns in southern Portugal and Spain. The cost was neglible, too.
