I have just found the thread on US electronics in Spain. I am elated that I can bring my computer and printer over (this board is the best). I have checked all of my equipment and it is all compatable with the 220 Volt system.

Now I am thinking about my big screen TV. I am sure that it won't work, but I have to ask. It is not 220 V compatable, but I could use an adapter. The question is could I use it to pick up Spanish TV or Sky digital or even just to watch DVD'S?

My DVD is 220 V compatable and can play DVD's from any country.

I know this is a long shot, but nothing ventured and so on.

Thanks,

Iain.

i am pretty sure you will have no problems with your dvd player (as long as you can swith it to 220V).

the broadcast standard for spain is PAL which is different than NTSC that is used in the states, so i am pretty sure that any tv or vcr that is NTSC will be pretty much useless in spain. i am not totally sure though if that would apply to a digital or sattelite service such as sky though. definitely research this before lugging a big screen over.

Hey Iain, glad you learned a lot from THAT THREAD Cool

May want to check your printer specs again. Unless it is a small, portable printer made for
travel with a laptop, it will probably not be compatible with the higher voltage here.

I would not risk frying an expensive big screen TV here. It will also probably be rather expensive to ship. If you do not get an EXCELLENT voltage tranformer WITH fuse you may risk a power surge here which could fry the transformer AND the TV attached to it. Some cheaper tranformers have no fuse, do not use one of them on a good appliance. If you get a transformer with a fuse and there is a power surge, the fuse will blow and cut power to the appliance, saving it from being fried.

I learned this the hard way with an Apple Stylewriter printer I had brought over years back. No fuse in the step-down tranformer. I left it printing a loooooong paper for school and went out, got back and... Eeker

Many areas of Madrid (and I assume Spain in general) have power ups and downs. For example, here in the Plaza Mayor of Madrid, we have power surges and quick power off then on "mini blackouts" at least once a day, especially in summer when power demand and consumption is much higher.

I have had to set up a UPS on my main PC that runs my webcam to avoid it crashing on a daily basi.

Thanks Jer,

I have come to the conclusion that moving my immense TV would be too much of a pain. I think the system in Europe is different anyway (more lines of resolution). I just got carried away when I saw the electronics thread and started checking everything in the house.

As for the printer, it is an HP psc 950 and the manual says that it is 110/220 compatible.

I will have a bucket of water handy when I put it on just in case.

Thanks, as always,

Iain.
