For what it's worth, I just today booked a flight to Madrid for May 9th. :l:
I will not be encumbered by fear. Sure, I may need a few belts before I get on the plane,
but it's better to venture out and be nervous than to stay home and wish you were venturing out.

NO.

Luckily most Europeans are intelligent enough to realize that just because our "fearless leader" Roll Eyes is a war monger, the American people do not necessarily back him.

I second Jer's statement..if a single word can be called a statement. I don't feel threatened at all here. There is quite a bit of anti-Bush graffiti about but also alot of Aznar bashing too. The funniest graffiti I saw said that Aznar is Bush's Lewinsky. Oh, if only we could impeach him! But alas mass murder and warfare is not as horrid as sexual dalliances and cigar play!

Anyway, I also think that it is much more dangerous in the states just now. Not only because of terrorism possibilities on soft targets (hotels, apartment complexes, grocery stores) but also because freedom of speech seems to be a thing of the past now too. I would be afraid to wear a Peace shirt or a No War pin. Some hillbilly in a John Deere hat might decide to shoot me with one of his twenty guns.

Oh, sorry, I've begun to rant. My point is you should really follow your heart here and not fears created by others. This is Spain and it is not in the Middle East. And like Pim said, if not being with friends is the problem, the MMers will surely throw a party to welcome you, so fear not.

Good luck,
Candela

Ifeel totally safe in Spain, but I am aware that I must be cognizant of my surroundings at all times. But then again, that's anywhere that you go.

I am going to return to Spain and not look back at the US. I need to retreat to my own world and within myself to get away from the madness.

TO ALL WHO WANT TO GO TO SPAIN, please go and live out your dreams. What's life without dreams? A life filled with emptiness.

Roll Eyes
Ok so it's wednesday 2pm in Los Angeles and my trip is still up in the air. One thing is for certain though, I am coming home a week early if I go. I figure that i'd rather have my parents and friends worry about me for 9 days rather than 15 so I compromised there. I wanted to say thanks for the idea of having a reception for me. I have been sort of disillusioned since some of my friends backed out but otherwise I am still excited to party and shop and eat and visit my old university (complutense) and see pretty spanish women and all that stuff. So thanks again for the support. I'll update you as soon as I know more.

Alright it's an hour later and the decision has been made. Unfortuntely I will not be coming to Spain this time around. With the uncertainty of the events of the war and the prospect of not being with my all of my friends and those I care for a lot, Madrid just would not have been the same. HOWEVER, something did come out of all the nonsense. Although i do have to study for my LSAT this summer, my friends and I have tentatively planned a summer European vacation with Madrid the city of honor. I'm gonna spend my Spring Break on the sunny sands of San Diego and maybe Las Vegas. Thanks for all the feedback everybody. I gotta say I really like this board Big Grin Red Face . Cheers

Hey payamadrid, I am saddened by your decision Frowner

I know you really wanted to come and that your friends bailing out have caused this. We were all pulling for ya buddy!!!

It would seem fear has begun to win out over the lust for life and adventure more than one would like to admit Frowner

With the beginning of the bombings this morning I have been notified of at least 3 trip cancellations by board members and clients who have been planning trips for months now Frowner I even know of one couple who has cancelled their honeymoon (that they have been planning for over a year) due to this war crap Razzer

Oh well, at least you can all still continue to live vicariously through multimadrid until your trips are possible again Smiler

What comedic timing Candela. This just arrived in my inbox this morning titled: 'la nueva becaria de la casa blanca' (The new intern at the White House)

I too am sad to hear about your decision payamadrid, but understand why you would do it. I echo what others have said in that I feel safer in Spain than in the US at present. That's all I'll say for the sake of argument.

Well, I'm still coming for my weekend jaunt (along with the one-quarter of our group who's American and can't wait to revisit Madrid). I called up the airline today, and check-in times have not increased (1.5 hours), so there doesn't appear to be any panic-stations in the UK (yet!). Looking forward to seeing Madrid for the first time, and meeting up with the "man from the Rover" in Finnegans to watch the rugby!
Salud!

I too am sad that people are postponing holiday trips because of the conflict. Just wanted to add that I have just finished a long day in Lanzarote airport welcoming holidaymakers from UK and not one of them even mentioned the conflict, or said that there was heightened security in UK airports After all, they are all on holiday charter flights which must be of little interest to terrorists in the whole scheme of things.
On a more serious note, my husband works in Saudi and is intent on returning to his work on 31st March, now THAT I call a trip to cancel.

 I probably should be at least a little worried, but I ain't.
