We are relocating to Spain within the next couple of months.
Has anyone arranged for pets to travel to Spain from Ireland.
Although there does not seems to be a lot of red tape involved it seems the only way to get them there are via air travel. We are taking the car and was hoping to take the cats with us on the ferry trip.

Any advice on this would be appreciated.

Hi Zue,

sorry; I am about to be of no help whatsoever, I just want to add my own question to yours !

We are likely to be going back to England this summer and I need to know how I can transport my son's two gerbils back with me. The thought of telling him that they have to stay in Spain is keeping me awake at night and making me consider smuggling the little rodents back with us on the ferry.

Does anyone have any experience of transporting pets into or out of Spain ?

Ireland to Spain- the ferry shouldn't be a problem. Just check with the Spanish Consulate or Embassy nearest you to see what papers you'll need. If you have to transit england, although they have a quarentine, as long as you're transiting and not planning any overnight... it'll be ok.

Spain to England. The gerbils WILL have to go through quareninte Frowner Its a 6 month stint, although you will have visitation rights. I don't know what will happen if you try to sneak them in and you're caught- could be a fine or jail time. I'd check with the British embassy if you're in Madrid and find out the details of transporting animals.

Good luck to both of you traveling with your fur babies! Smiler

oooooh jer I am shocked at you Eeker Big Grin Why not let those poor gerbils free in Madrid and just buy some more when you get home fiona? You can always tell your son that they had to go on an earlier flight to you, and have someone buy new ones at the other end

To get back to a serious note Big Grin . . .doesn't the pet passport scheme overcome the quarantine thingy? I refuse to move unless my two cats come with us (have already been teaching them miaow in Spanish, but they are slow learners) but don't fancy a six-months quarantine for them if we decide to return home.

Zue, this might be some help:

Thanks for the advice.

It seems the only way for the cats to travel is via air. I have found a removal company that arranges the whole trip and not too expensive either. Suppose it is the least traumatic and shortest way.
