I undoubtedly misspelled the two possible side trips, but so be it.
Any information on the availability/advisability of these trips out of Madrid? The AVE gets me to Sevilla, but I thought it might be interesting to move just a bit South for a day or two.
Passed Gib on a USMC Med Cruise years back, and it looked very interesting.

Don't say it Jer.....I probably put this post in the "wrong" section, even though the heart was in the "right" place.....(I bet I was close, though)....per usual I rely upon your tact and constant monitoring to keep me on the straight and narrow.

I know the coast in the 'deep south' quite well but want to explore more. In particular want to take the train that runs through the hills past Ronda and on down to Algeciras.
I believe that if you take the 08.15 TALGO train to Algeciras you could arrive at 14.05. Unless you got off at Ronda station ! Algeciras to Gibraltar is not too far by taxi.
That railway line has some interesting history and the hotel sitting on the edge of the precipice in Ronda called 'Hotel Reina Victoria' dates back to the day when the enterprising railway company brought their 'punters' to the beautiful town.
There are frequent sailings from Algeciras to Morocco (both Ceuta and Tangiers) - for example EUROFERRIES and then there is Transmeditteranean

Thank you, Nige, for the info.....(thanks Jer, for the correct location of my post.....this is good for two, not one, Jerez)....is it possible to basically take a day trip out of Algeciras, brief stop at Gib, ferry to Morocco, buy a post card and return the same day to Algeciras?

I have not actually visited Gibraltar proper - only the border crossing at La Linea which is adjacent to the airport. Still a popular crossing place for Spaniards and anyone looking for English goods and duty frees.
I am not sure if the ferry service still operates on a regular basis across to Morocco but anyway, there will be far more choice from Algeciras.
A day trip to Morocco would certainly be on the cards from Algeciras. You could even go on the overnight ESTRECHO service from Madrid leaving at 23.10 which is supposed to arrive at Algeciras at 09.30. (was i serious??)
If you are just going for a postcard, beware of the 'touts' who will be gunning for you and your money. The expression 'bees around a honey pot' springs to mind. You may even come home with a carpet if you're not careful.
