Hey all, have done a quick search on the board, I'm trying to figure out the best way to get to Bilbao from Madrid. It appears that a train would take about 5 or 6 hours. Has anyone taken the bus? Has anyone flown? I am just interested in hearing peoples' experiences in how they got there and what worked and how long it took you! Is it worth it!?!? hmmm? Thanx, Joy

Joy,

I just took the train to see a friend and the ride wasn't that bad. I had "100 Years of Solitude" with me and by the 6th year, I was there already. Red Face

But seriously, I can't imagine taking a bus. I went on the TALGO and it was roomy.

It took about 6 hours by train. It was very picturesque and I enjoyed the ride. The train was very cheap for me. I didn't compare it to the bus. I refused to do that.

Queensita, check out Iberia for the one hour flight. Yesterday I was able to get 3 one ways from Bilbao to Madrid for 86.35 Euros ( for the 3 tickets)...I thought that was an excellent price!

WOW ! Marcela - That is reasonable. I have often checked the IBERIA website for fares and can never get a deal like that one: Madrid - Bilbao - 3 for the price of a half !!
WHAT'S THE SECRET? Are you booking Special offers? Or are you booking for certain days? or are you just plain lucky !?
Would love to know the secret.

For the longer journeys you can get a carriage with a bed in and Bilbao is one of these journeys. I am not sure how much it would add to the price but all the times and prices are on the RENFE website. Otherwise, if you were thinking about getting a plane my friend got a cheap flight to Bilbao with Air Europa from Madrid off their website a months ago.

Hey Lauren, sooooo right!!! For the overnight trains to Bilbao (normally 1 a day), you can get a bed.

Anyone needs more info, see the MADRID TO BILBAO RENFE SCHEDULE.

The night train is the one called "Costa Vasca" and it takes just under 9 hours. Bed prices are listed THERE as well.

Seeing the CITIES IT PASSES THROUGH, it must be some nice scenery, too bad it is a night train Frowner

Yes, and if you are taking the night train with another person, and can thus share a first class 2-bed compartment, it's only 13,50 euros more than sitting up in a seat all night. Well worth it.

Hi,
I took the night train from Madrid to Bilbao last year...our seats pulled out enough to sleep on...if you're short. Still, I prefer it over bus; have done the bus route several times in the past and can never sleep because I'm either freezing from the airconditioning or can't get comfortable in my seat. Plus, I'm a sucker for a train ride.

Ok, I know I'm a day late and a dollar short on this one, but for future reference I supose: I have done the Madrid-Bilbao BUS ride several times and find it a quite pleasant experience. it is quicker than the train (about 4.5 hours) and costs about 35 euros round trip, if i remember correctly. There are lots of different buses through out the day, so you have more flexiblity with when you want to leave/return. The buses leave from the Avenida de America Station in Madrid. Also, it is a VERY pretty ride, especially as you get closer to Bilbao. So, there you have it, but as I said...Just one girl's opinion...
