Taking care of Baleares is the idea!
As of today (May 1st, 2002) andyone visiting the Baeleric Islands here will have to pay 1 Euro per person per day extra when they check into their hotel.
It is called the "Eco Tasa" (Eco Tax) and is supposedly going to be used to take better care of the islands (cleaning, etc...).
Some hotels will give you a cupon for the same amount that you pay for the Eco Tasa of yourstay that you can use for free drinks, food, etc... at the hotel so actually the added tax will not really cost anything since you are getting products for it.
Other hotels will not give you anything at all.
Sol Melia (hotel chain) and a few other huge chains will pay the Eco Tasa themselves and not charge their clients anything at all.
I guess you can ask your hotel what they are doing about the new tax before you make your reservation if you want to but either way, kudos galore to the govt. of Baleares for this great new system
