re: filling it, i got a 5L water jug from the store and fill that up in my sink. after 2.5 trips to the sink (abt 12-13L) the thing is filled. mine makes the air moist too, but for me that's a good thing as i'm still adjusting to the dry madrid air. i noticed when the water was gone it was just running like a normal fan too (actually, the warmer air at this point woke me up and i re-filled my penguin).

does this use about the same amount of energy as a normal fan? (i hope the gods of the message board deem energy efficiency as a proper priority for me die laughing)

Just to let you know: Media Markt does NOT carry Convair coolers. I checked.
I got a 235EUR model (Magicool) since the initial swampy odor from Marino model scared me off. I tend to run it without (or very little) water during the day and with at night. The first night I put it on (last Sunday) I actually got cold!!! Had to get up and turn the thing to drier setting.
The Convair cooler (both Marino and Magicool) uses only 58W of energy - like a lightbulb - its very efficient. Personally, I like the idea of keeping my windows open for the air circulation because otherwise I just feel claustrophobic.
Just like Wendy said, there is a larger model (Mastercool wink )that is designed to cool a larger area and it uses only 85W. This one takes 15l. of water.

this thing was here in the apartment when i moved in. i just looked at the box in the closet here (i don't see the manual inside), and all i can tell is that it is Convair, maybe the Millenia model (or else it's just some other trademakr) and it's 100% hecho in australia. eeker Australia?

And a couple more things-the swampy smell is gone-it was due to the wood fiber filter this particular model of Convair uses-others don't have it.

As for the electricity-just like Ola said, they claim it uses less than a light bulb.

And to the coffee suggestion, not so silly, they actually say that you can add a few drops of essential oil to the water and it will diffuse the scent-I prefer citrus, but coffee could do as well. Do they make a coffee essential oil??????? nutz

Hot here in mighty humid Michigan, too. I have dry eye syndrome, too. AC in bedroom and living(window units) only, and too much time on the computer.

My eye doc said ordinary eye drops don't work because there are two kinds of tears, the salty wet weepy kind and the "oily" lubricating all the time kind. So be sure you get the right kind.

I never heard of a swamp cooler until I started researching the mist fans (saw them first in Madrid in the bus station?) Here, people tend to use them on their decks, stables and the like. They set you back a bundle. Don't know how they'd cool an already humid place.

i think you're right about the eye drops. my normal visene didn't do anything (then again, i noticed it had expired in feb '06) but the drops from the pharmacy do feel more oily and they have helped a lot.

Actually Sue, in a humid climate you'd want just the opposite to a swamp cooler.... a dehumidifier. The effect that both the swamp cooler and the dehumidifier are trying to achieve is cooling via evaporation. Since a really humid climate prevents proper transpiration, a dehumidifier pulls enough moisture out of the air to allow the skin to properly cool itself.

In a dry climate like Madrid's, spraying a fine mist along with a strong breeze creates a refreshing evaporation on those nearby.

Having grown up in both tropical and desert like environments I have to say I much prefer the dry. As long as you watch your water intake, you can put up with much higher temperatures and not be completely exhausted all the time. I do have to use plenty of Eucerin to avoid shriveling up.

Plus, your clothes dry in an instant. cool

Quite correct. Having visited the Southwest here, and dry areas in Spain, I know what you mean. We do indeed have a dehumidifier in the basement and I believe the window air conditioners work to draw the moisture out as well. I did buy a personal mister gizmo at Walgreen's that I put in the fridge for some cool mist on top of the sweat! Seems to help a bit.
