Hey all, first post here. I tried to see if this topic had already been discussed so just refer me if I missed it. Anyone know what I need to do to bring my cat over to Spain with me? I found lots of resources about moving pets from England, but not from the US. Fortunately I have all his original papers, rabies certificate, etc so hopefully I can do it.

Also, what is the Spanish word for "Meow?" I think in French it's "Mieu" or something like that. :-)

Hi Juliette67, hope it is the first of many posts Big Grin

Check out the thread entitled "BRINGING PETS" for some good info on bringing your "minino" (putty tat :jeje: ) if you have not already seen it. I did a search on "pets" at my search section www.multimadrid.com/cgi-bin/jersbbucgi/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=search

A "meow" here is called a "maullido" and the verb is actually "maullar" Big Grin

Saludos,

Hey Chica, you are right with "Miau", that is the actual sound they make, like "Meeeeoooooo" in English.

I had just given the "verb" and the "noun" but that "Miau" is more practical.

Miiiiiiiiiiiaaaaaaaaaauuuuuuuuuuuuuuuzzers!!!

Wouldn't it be easier and a lot less expensive for you to find a spare cat here in Spain and care for it until you and the original cat can be reunited? If you plan on staying in Spain a long time you could find a good home for your original cat back home before you left and just get a new cat here? I mean imagine if you spent all that money and effort to get your cat all the way over here and then upon arrival when you open the cage it just runs away and heaven forbid gets hit by a car.
Even though your cat has sentimental value, there are a lot of local cats that need a home and could help you get over your seperation anxiety.

Hey Madrid Insider, duuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuudeeeeeee! That was THE single most depressing post I have ever read Eeker

You have obviously never had a pet of your own Roll Eyes

Get a "spare cat" like one could just replace a beloved member of the family at the bat of an eye Frowner

I am gonna chalk up that post to the lateness of its delivery (3:17am) and pretend you were just overly tired did not just tell Juliette67 to replace her kitty Red Face

My vet told me that he has sent a couple of his patients to Spain, all I needed was proof of rabies vacc and a microchip to identify the little monster. So I had him chipped when I had him neutered.
I called British Airways, who told me it would probably cost me about $800 to fly Norm over! Eeker
It would be worth it though. (Now all I have to do is find a job).

Hahaha, you guys are so funny! Ok, so as an owner of cats, I have to say, I agree with Jer, Rocco, what if I told you to go replace your sister with another one, even though she had sentimental value? hahaha. Just kidding. I don't even know your sister...

And my question is this, how can British Airways want to charge more money for a cat than a person? So bizarre. This was a great posting in all though, because I have been debating whether to get a new cat over there when I move, because if I come back to the States will I want to go through all this...so thanks for all the info everyone! Juliette, have you looked at coming to Spain via UK? Apparently you can "do a deal" with BA or Britannia (so Ive been told) as long as the pets are "legal"!!! If this could be a possibility I will try and find out more info for you

I was just joking. You are right I never had any pets while growing up. So if you want to spend the outrageous amount of money they charge to bring your cat to Spain more power to you.
You see, I saw this special report recently, where they compared the treatment of humans to the treatment of Animals and it got me thinking.
They showed how homeless shelters and medical treatment facilities were all runned down and over crowded while the pets had their own hotels and houses with air conditioning and in door plumbing as well as top notch medical facilities with all of the latest equippment.
So I take it back. Take in a spare homeless person not a cat. Big Grin

BTW: Jennyfyc / Mermaid.
Wow!!! What a coincidence. I had my sister chipped when I had her neutered. :l:

Rocco.

*cough* OMG, I had left this thread behind before reading Roccos "suggestion," probably a good thing! Our minino will be sent to us next Tuesday, and I cant wait!

For the information of others, there is apparently a direct, daily flight from Philadelphia on I think USAirways that leaves at 8 at night and arrives in Madrid in the early AM, thus avoiding the heat problem that prevents some animals from being flown at all. The cost of the flight is $260. We are using a professional pet shipper, so there are additional costs as well. Once we actually get him in our hands Ill let you know how it all went.

It is true, I would spend my last cent to get him here. Once he hugs you (and this cat in fact hugs people when you hold him) you will understand why.

BUT! We do in fact plan to adopt a homeless kitten for him to play with, AND we need supplies for the both of them! So, anyone know of a) a good pet shop for supplies, and b) shelters where one can adopt gatitos?

Since I work for British Airways, let me clarify the outrageous expense of sending pets with them.

First of all- if the pet it traveling unaccompanied- its going to be MUCH more money.

Also, since we don't fly directly to spain- but you'll always have the london stop- there's the whole transferring kitty or dog to the other plane...

Also- depending on when the pet is traveling- well that influences also. Keep in mind that when any airline carries a pet- since they fly cargo- special arrangements in the plane need to be made.
(basically so the animal doesn't freeze to death! [Embarassed] )

Also- British Airways for the most part is cancelling that service period. Because of the added expense and effort by the airline, they really don't want to take the pets unless they have to- thus when they do, the cost! Eeker US airways is a good option because they do have a direct flight Smiler

I am an animal lover and have a fur baby myself- I only hope that your move is permanent to Spain or an extended stay (2-3 years) as flying is a major trauma for pets and should not done just to have them close by during your prolonged visit. (That's for people contemplating a few weeks or a couple of months- please think it over VERY carefully!)

Thanks Espe! We are in fact here for the duration, most likely permanently, and in fact we chose USAirways over BA for exactly the reasons you describe. We also figured that an overnight stay in London (which is apparently required) would extend his trauma even further. Im horrified by the thought of what hell go through to get to us, and Im just hoping that hes young and resilient enough to recover. And to enjoy this awesome apartment we have for him....so many places to hide, climb, and play...much better than what we had in DC. ::fingers crossed::
