I'm a bit of a shopaholic and clothes horse, and am wondering about where to shop in Madrid. Specifically, I am looking for clothing stores off the beaten path, like up and coming designers or vintage clothing stores, as opposed to larger mainstream stores like El Corte Ingles. Also, ladies does anyone know where to go for handbags and shoes? I went to El Rostro about 5 years ago and found some interesting items there. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks!

Better WAY late than never.

Seems the vintage and second hand clothing market is opening up a bit here.

I pulled this ad from my classifieds by InMadrid for June, 2002.

quote:
"VINTAGE CLOTHING 50s, 60s and 70s. Brand new, for men and women. Shirts, blouses, pullovers, dresses, swimwear. Incredible prices. Address: c/Raimundo Lulio, 10, Madrid (Metro: Bilbao and Iglesia). Tel: 616 98 17 60, mainly Fridays and Saturdays."
Saludos,

Besides 'el Rastro' and the place that Jer talks about, check out 'el Mercado de Fuencarral' on calle Fuencarral.

Hi,

We are now in Granada and have walked into three used, vintage clothing stores right next to the University. They have very cheap leather jackets there and the prices are great. They had some sales where everything was only 3 Euros. One was called "Ropero" on Escuelas 12 which is next to Facultad de Derecho Law School, off Durquesa. They were spacious (two parts of the store) and had dressing rooms. I didnt see any in Madrid or Sevilla but Im sure they are there.

Hey jojo, cool!

In Madrid, the RASTRO STREET MARKET has some stands with second hand and vintage clothing and worth special mention are a few stands that sell loads of leather and suade jackets (all second hand) at the great price of 30 uros Big Grin

Saludos,

p.d. Glad you are having a good time in Granada, who would not!

Reviving an ancient thread...

I'm in a friend's wedding in less than two weeks and she chose navy blue as the color for the bridesmaid dresses. Conservative navy blue...

So I've gone to at least three dozen stores, including the largest department store in all of Spain and haven't seen a single dress (or skirt or shirt) in navy blue.

So I'm thinking that my only hope might be a vintage shop. I dug through piles at the Rastro yesterday and didn't see anything. Also the shop Humana on C/Toledo. And another down by Puerta de Toledo...

Any other ideas?

Anyone ever had clothes dyed here in Madrid?

hey...if the wedding is in the states, you may as well wait until you get there..or try ordering online from Lands End, J Crew or one of those shops that carry colors like navy.

If you must buy here...yikes. Did you try the Humano shops? There is one on Rios Rosas, up a few blocks from the metro on the left.

Another option is to have something made for you. It is much cheaper than you'd expect. Kristin from writing and the board has the scoop on that. I'll email you her contact info.

Good luck!
