I have just read a web abt Madrid with advises abt to stay here with 20 euros /day.
Pls , in your first Madrid trip, you mustconsider only 3 points.
1.-You have to forget your country times , fof example on Saturday and Sunday morning the street are empty up to 10 pm(usually breakfast times are from 9:00 / 11:30 am.
"Aperitivo (tapas) tomes are from 12 to 13:30 pm and lunch tine from 2:00 to 3:30 pm.
the week end the people use to rest(sleeping "siesta " abt 2 hours ), so strets are empty again from 4 to 8 pm.
the real life in Madrid will from 8.30 pm up to 4.00 am.
2.-You have to forget stay in Madrid wuith only few euros. 32.000 bars anrestaurants, 30 museums , 30 thesatres , several pop, jast, flamenco ,concets every night and a lot of shopping will do imposible enjoing the city .
if you want to spent few euros you must go to Barcelona ,Bilbao ,Santiago de Compostelo but never in Madrid.

Thanks for the advice payno but hate to break the bad news to you, ya can't stay in Barcelona ,Bilbao ,Santiago de CompostelA for 20 Euros/day either Ni de coa! (unless you sleep in a park and eat bark! )
Jer ,sorry I did a mistake with my mouse computer and the message was posted incomplete and without correcting the spelling errors(I am a beginner english student only).
Well, you can cross Spain from Jaca(Huesca) to Santiago de Compostela ("Camino de Santiago") with 20 euros /day , but sleeping in pilgrim lodging(most of them are free ).
Other way to Santiago is from Irun (Camino de Santiago del norte) you pass by Bilbao, Santander and Oviedo.
There is other way (El Camino de la plata) from Sevilla to Santiago with stage in pretty spanish town :Sevilla, Merida,Caceres,Salamanca, ,Zamora and Orense.
Saludos

Glad you posted, payno, especially since the Camino de Santiago is something I've wanted to do. Don't worry about your English; just keep on practicing and sharing about your country.
You can stay in Bilbao at the youth hostel in a double room for 15 euros for bed and breakfast, and eat dinner there alsofor 6 euros, so that is one city where you could just about fit the budget you mentioned. A room with more people is cheaper.
Pack light, sleep cheap, eat well.

Way back in my youth, call it the Hippie days , it was possible to travel on a 20 Euro per day budget, particularly Spain of the late 1970's!
Not anymore! My son and I spent on average 45 euro for lodging, using Bancotel coupons, and another 60 euros for meals, sightseeing and local transportation. On our next trip I am estimating spending 120 Euros per day and living as Rick Steves says "Spain throughthe back door."
Still and all I believe that Spain remains the best travel bargain in Europe. Not many places can you experience so much history in one location. and of all capital cities Madrid is still a great bargain. Viva Espaa!

Hey Booklady...How was the service (hotel quality, availability, acceptance of coupons, etc.) you received with the 'Bancotel' (Click here to visit their site.) coupons? Max recommended the service to me some time ago.
I've spent a fair amount of time on their site yet, but haven't used the service. It looks like a great concept. I'd love to hear if you liked the concept and if it generally worked for you. Thanx...

Hey payno, thanks for the additional info. Do not worry, your English is fine
I still think that even with a 15 euro per night place to sleep and a 6 euro dinner, you are going to want to have a little somethign for lunch, not to mention the occasional soft drink or bottel of water to avoid dehydration so I wouldd say the minimum per day in Spain should be set at between 25 and 30 euros per day.
tonytorero, Booklady (and others) have talked about Bancotel vouchers on other threads on this board. The thread HERE is a pretty good one and you can do a search on "bancotel" at my SEARCH PAGE to find more threads that touch on the subject
