While being based in Madrid, we want to visit Toledo, Segovia, and El Escorial/Valle de los Cados as day excursions. What is the most efficient transportation for a family of 4? We're toying with single day car rentals (at least for the logistics of Escorial/Valle). But then I read you can get a taxi to Toledo for virtually the same price--We wanted to be able to stop for the panoramic views from the Circunvalacin road-but then can we easily get a taxi back into Madrid? Also, considering days that various sights are closed in Madrid and these other locations--any thoughts on best days to go and/or stay in Madrid?

Hi Cathy, many have asked this question on the board. I think that to be more comfortable you should either rent a car or take the train.

You can get great car deals on a Mercedes A Class which would be perfect for a family of 4, please see the rental car thread by clicking HERE Big Grin

I can not imagine that anyone would recommend a cab to Toledo with the overwhelming rip-offs discussed lately at the taxi rip-off thread HERE Eeker

Renting a car would be the cheapest and best way to go, especially if you want to stop off and take pics. I can imagine a taxi driver with an ear to ear grin on his face just imagining all the Euros he will get you for if you tried that "stop here, stop here" on him, there goes your kids college funds Eeker

For RENFE (train) info, please see my MADRID TRANSPORTATION SECTION

Any day is a good day in Madrid Big Grin

Saludos,

Cathy, I know that the museums in Madrid are closed one day a week but am not sure if it is Monday like in the USA. My husband and I have our "cultural Sundays" when we hit the museums because admittance is free...we can even invite his mother and come away earning lots of brownie points at no cost!! Big Grin

I would recommend train or bus for your day trips rather than the hassle of renting then parking the car. Its nice to hop on a train or bus after a day of excursion and just vege out instead of having the to drive back to Madrid. There are great points all around Toledo (walking distance) to take pics of the scenery and panorama. Id venture to say that the bus or train would come out cheaper than car rental for a family of 4 (factor in gas and parking).

Have fun!
