Hi desha, seems I was posting at the same time you were or pretty close since your post was sent in just as I was writing my loooong response to Candela. Check out the offers at the provioders near the bottom of my thread above to see what specials they have. Yes, around 40 Euros is the going rate for a basic ADSL. Don't pay for instalation nor the modem as they are all offering it free with sign up. Hey, maybe you can still get the free digital camera that Terra ADSL is offering.
Would love to see if they deliver in less than 15 days (3 weeks since they are probably 15 "business" days). Saludos, jer...

AWESOME Candela!!! As I said, only a good friend would let you use his line, lucky you, he/she just saved you about 200 Euros and a lot of headaches Cable is definitely the cheaper option, the basic cable internet service ("Net 128" below) costs 24 Euros per month but I have been looking into it and it is technically half as fast as a basic ADSL. There are faster lines as well, see "Net 300" and "Net 600" below which might be better for you, although "Net 600" is a bit too much. There also seems to be a 60.10 Euro installation fee and another 60 Euro "alta" (AKA "flip the switch") fee while the ADSL installation and "alta" are both free with most deals.
It also looks like you have to rent the cable modem from them for another 9 Euros per month So, if you have the cable internet service for a year, the modem has cost you 125.28 Euros and is not even yours, if you end the service, they take it back So, for the basic cable internet service you are looking at: 120.10 Euro setup total (+ 16% I.V.A.). 33 Euros/month, 24 for the service and 9 for the modem rental (+ 16% I.V.A.). ADSL is looking better every minute!!! Besides, they give you the modem with ADSL I would go with ADSL! Choose wisely young skywalkerette Saludos, jer...

Almost forgot... I am in the process of setting up an office here in Madrid ( ) and I called Telefnica as I needed a land line and subsequently a DSL connection in there. I almost passed out when I ordered the land line on this past Wednesday (Feb. 26) and they came to install it on Friday (Feb. 28th) of the SAME week I will let you know how long they now take to put in the DSL line, clock starts ticking on Monday, March 3rd. I thought I had responded last fall, and updated with my situation. yes, i am here. have been since september! for a while, i was going to a cyber and not sure if i was even going to get internet in my apartment afterall. i contacted ONO but they said that in my building it was not possible ot have their services (something with the cables not being installed). since then, my roommate and i have decided to not get internet in the house, as what we spend coming to a Cyber is less than what we would pay for internet in the house. even though it would be a nice convenience, somehow coming to a cyber makes the ``living abroad`` situation a little more genuine, as we both have internet at home back in the US. so, after all the questions and answers, i decided not to use any of it! but, im glad to know this post has been helpful for many others. thanks!

Hey binkx, thanks for the update. Pretty coincidental that you posted today since the ADSL line I was waiting for at my new office was delivered today  You must have had a premonition. So, I am IMPRESSED by Telefnica, it only took them from March 3rd to the 20th to set up my ADSL Super fast by their standards. quote: "...i contacted ONO but they said that in my building it was not possible ot have their services (something with the cables not being installed)."
For me there is only one ADSL worthwhile, that of Telefnica or Terra. quote: "somehow coming to a cyber makes the ``living abroad`` situation a little more genuine".
I agree up to a certain point. That is true for the first 6 months or so that you live abroad here or for shorter stays when you know you are going back to your home country but when one decides to stay forever ( ), the ADSL at home becomes a must. True binkx, this thread has proven to be one of the best (if not THE best) and most informative on this topic on the www. /> Thanks for asking all those questions
Ok, on a side note and getting back to my new office and ADSL line. In order to take full advantage of the connection, I am setting up a few (3 or 4) laptop workstation ports in the reception area of the office where people will be able to come and plug their laptop into the network and surf, surf, surf
Keep an eye on the board (specifically the SPAIN INTERNET FORUM for a new thread on this. Saludos, jer...

Not to bring up old ghosts... but have been researching getting my landline set up and this is the place for it! I have a couple of basic (I hope) questions as this thread somewhere went from general phone to phone and ADSL to just ADSL information. What I would like help with is approx. costs for the following options: Initial set up costs for basic phone service. Initial set up for basic phone/adsl. Monthly Basic phone service-'rental'fee (I'd like 2 phones, one regular and one cordless). Side question here: My family in Spain don't have all rented telefonica phones- so is it possible for me to provide the phones and not pay the rental fee? Or really is the rental fee just their way of charging you for basic phone service? Its fine either way, but I'd rather buy a phone on sale and it be mine than stuck with a telefonica phone. Monthly Basic phone service (again reg phone and cordless) with ADSL service. Also approx how much do those of you who are in Spain spend per mo in local calls? (for international I'll be using a phone card or my adsl connection to speak with people) Obviously the less expensive the better. I don't have any loyalty to telefonica (I know it depends on what service providers I could get in my area anyways- let's just assume its not an issue for simplicity.) Oh! And can anyone explain to me what the bonificacion Telefonica does on your bill? I've gone over it a couple of times but don't get it. Of course, it could be because its been a looooong day and its 2 am and I'm still up! (Going to bed right now!) Thanks so much in advance! I know you guys will do what you can!

Espe3,
I can help you with part of your questions. When I moved into my apartment, I had two ROTARY DIAL phones with obsolete jacks (i.e., non RJ-11) installed in my apartment. Actually, to be more precise, one was installed, and the other was just sitting around unplugged. Anyway, Telefonica was charging me 2 Euros per month per handset, so I would have been paying 48 Euros a year for this "convenience." We talked to Telefonica and they finally cancelled the handset rental charge, though they have yet to come pick up the handsets (probably more trouble than it's worth.)
I got my ADSL service through ya.com., which didn't charge any fee for the "alta" and threw in a router/modem and an additional NIC card for free. I believe they are still offering the same package. I pay about 45 Euros a month for their service.

Thank you Eduardo- so I can furnish the phones, correct? But what did it cost you then for them to come out and connect the phone? And what is the monthly charge for the basic phone line? How do you like the ya.com service? Is it 24 hour tarifa plana?

Hey espe3. Eduardo got lucky by having the line active when he moved in, saved him the 120 Euro "flip the switch" fee that Telefnica charges YES, you can use your own phone, you need not rent theirs. At home Ena and I have 2 lines (one hers and the other mine) and an ADSL over my line (I say over since they just lay the ADSL service over the landline). I have my own phone/fax machine on my line and Ena has a cordless on her line as well as a second extension in the kitchen with a Telefnica phone that we got elsewhere and DO NOT rent. Buy your own phones instead of renting them from Telefnica, in the long run it works out better and since a phone is not a highly complex piece of electronics, you should be fine. Ok, so you say you want "2 phones, one regular and one cordless". Question is, do you want 2 phones or 2 lines??? From what I read it looks like you want 1 line with ADSL so here are the current costs assuming there is no active line in the place you are moving to and you use your own phones... Activation (one time). 1) "Alta" (activation) on the line = 77.53€ + IVA (89.93€ with IVA). 2) ADSL "Alta" (activation) = 38.10€ + IVA (44.20 with IVA). This includes a free USB modem to be used on 1 PC only. You can opt to pay another 90 Euros for a router with 4 RJ45 jacks for connections on up to 4 PCs. Monthly costs. 1) Line = 12.62€ + IVA (14.64€ with IVA). 2) ADSL = 39.07€ + IVA (45.32€ with IVA). The ADSL will be billed monthly and but the Line fees will be billed ever 2 months. Keep in mind that these are prices of doing it all with Telefnica. Ok, if what you want is 2 RJ11 jacks (phone jacks) for the same line to have an extension), you will need to pay a bit more for installation. Either that or skip it and split the line yourself with a simple phone splitter and run a phone line into the other room you want an extension in. Also, last I had a line put in (my office), I had not oredered another "roseta" (phone jack) to be activated although there were 2 (one in each room). The installation guy offered to activate the second one if I gave him 10€ extra. This was obviously unnofficial so don't be surprised if it happens and you can take advantage of it and even haggle with him if you prefer to have 2 jacks to the idea of splitting it yourself and running a phone cord around the house. I am very pleased with my Telefnica and Terra ADSL (have one of each) but as eduardo said, sometimes they have problems, it is a necessary evil. I will not get into the different ADSL offers as the companies are always changing their deals and "alta" fees. For example, when I got my ADSL at home it was the early years of ADSL here so I did it with Terra and got my activation free as well as a kick-ass 3COM router for up to 4 PCs to connect to. Just a few months ago I got the office ADSL put in and had to pay the 90 Euros extra (opted to) for the good router with multiple conections although activation was free, which it seems not to be anymore So, as you see, always a changin!!! Read through this thread from the start, there are links to all the TelyCos on it and their ADSL offers. Compare and go with the best for you. Saludos, jer...

Hi all, I started reading this thread from the beginning and now have a headache! haha I just have one simple question. It seems like DSL will run about 40E's a month. That includes everything. The monthly amount for the ADSL service + the land line monthly fee. If I were to dial up I would have to pay the land line monthly fee, per minute amounts for using the 56k service and per minute amounts for using the line. Is that right? THanks a lot. Mike

Hey Mike, see the part of my thread above where it reads... quote: Monthly costs. 1) Line = 12.62€ + IVA (14.64€ with IVA). 2) ADSL = 39.07€ + IVA (45.32€ with IVA).
These are BOTH necessary costs to have ADSL since you need to have the basic line in to install ADSL over it. Still have to keep on paying the basic line, even if you never put a telephone on it nor make a single call. That brings the cost of ADSL to just under 60€/month. A dialup is dfferent, you still need the landline but then if you use a per hour plan, you will indeed pay for every hour you are connected. Most choose a dialup flat fee (Tarifa Plana) with one of the many who offer them to connect at certain hours all they want (ie. Mon.-Fri. 6pm-8am and all weekend long). One or more of the previous posts on this thread has more on the "Tarifa Plana" from various providers. Saludos, jer...
