Hello,

I have recently obtained a TEFL qualification and I am looking to move and work in Spain. Can anyone give me any advice as to the best way of going about this, i.e. is it best for me to get contacts beforehand or simply get on a plane and come over? Are there any sites on which I could post my resume? etc etc.

I would greatly appreciate any help or advice that anyone can give me at this stage.

Kind regards,
Annaliese

there is loads of work here simply start making calls once you arrive. Or perphaps a month or so before arrving send out your CV Resume out. Check out lingobongo.com

Also i suggest contacting loads of agencys as the more offers you have the better the chance of getting block hours in a good location.

pay rates around 15 an hour in the hand cash or 22 an hour legal (you pay all taxes social security)

Thank you for getting back to me.

Is there a good site to go to that will give me the contact details for agencies (without me having to pay a lot of money for that privilege)?

What area would you say is the best area for me to go to?

Thanks,
Annaliese

www.lingobongo.com for 10 euros you can send your CV to every agency in Madrid. That I think is the easist way. I would wait untill shortly before your here, most agencys (make that all) won't hire without a face to face.

Secondly you have www.madridteacher.com and in-madrid.com (I think).

I agree with Tim. I know that you are excited and all about the move, but you have to wait until you get here, make telephone calls and actually go to academies and set up appointments. All will work out for the best, but you do need to be here in order to make it work and happen.

Good luck,

Shawn

hey angeltatt74.

if money is no object, accommodation is easy but if not, it can be very difficult.

best to do search SEARCHES search here on the board and post any accommodations questions on threads on accommodations so that this one does not get too off-topic which is where this one is heading.

SEARCH for terms like "apartments", "apartment hunting", "housing" and similar. you will find that housing and work are probably the 2 most discussed topics on these forums.

and don't forget jer's number 1 rule for coming over... BRING AT LEAST ENOUGH MONEY SAVED UP TO LIVE ON FOR 12 MONTHS WITHOUT WORKING.

a conservative estimate for that is 8,500 Euros ($11,300 USD).

saludos,
jer...

More good advice Jer. I had just 2 months saved up, but I forgot that the dollar was low in 2003, but I still enjoyed my stay there in Madrid. Some rough times, but all in all, I would do it again, now that I am wiser and older. It was a great learning experience and I know that the best is yet to come.

jer, now you've got me worried. I thought that I'd be pretty secure coming to Spain with around $7000 in USD to get settled and tide me over till I have a secure teaching schedule. Would your estimate of how much money to bring also hold for someone like me with many years of teaching experience to offer future employers?

Well, with todays currency values your $7000 comes to 5268.97 euros. Factor in that a room in a shared apartment will cost about 350 euros, plus food and expenses if your careful you could live on 800 euros a month. On the other hand if you were thinking of getting an apartment of your own you'll be spending about 1000 euros a month just on that alone so your money obviously won't go as far. You might get lucky and find a studio for around 700 euros though. You'll probably be fine with what you've saved, but you'll be under pressure to find work immediatly, however if your coming over in January you'll be in luck as there are many English teachers that leave Spain around the Christmas holidays so the academys are looking.

Good luck,
Bonnie

Hi Bonnie,

Thanks for your swift answer to my post. I know that I'll need to start looking for work right away and that January is a good time to do just that. I've already written to a couple of schools that have good reputations and are willing to hire non-EU instructors and will set up interviews with them once I'm finally in Madrid. Of course, I won't stop there and will send my resume around to other schools, maybe through lingobongo.com.

As far as a place to live is concerned, I've been really lucky! I will be renting a one-bedroom apartment, a ten-minute walk from the Plaza de Castilla, from a Spanish friend for 550 euros a month plus electricity. So if I don't go crazy eating out too much and taking interesting weekend trips, I should be all right.

that's a very good location, you have 3 lines all going into city. You also have bus access to Tres Cantos and other citys where you get alot of business as well.

Bonnie,

That depends on where he wants to live. If he wants to live in Puente de Vallecas and in the south, such as Legazpi or Embajadores, there are still apartments WAY below 1000 euros a month. It's all about location.

Remember that the price of rooms are going up too so that 350 has quickly become a thing of the past and he has to add in utilities.

All in all, please do not get scared. Come with what you have and make it work for you in the long run. It can be done. I rented a place for 650 and earned about 1,300 a month, but that amount varied with my private students. Yes, some months were tight, but even people who pay 350 a month in rent for a room can have a bad month, so in the end, it's all relative.

Come and be prosperous,

Shawn

Marsha, your housing is quite inexpensive, and that will be a big help in terms of your finances. As in most places the single biggest cost is a place to stay. Like Redwood and others mentioned, I would suggest focusing a lot on getting work quickly.

Also set up a Spanish bank account soon after arriving to deposit your earnings - I suggest going to branches in cities outside Madrid if possible as they may have easier document requirements. At least, that was my experience. Maybe a Madrid suburb would work.

I don't know how all of the academies function, but at some (like the one I was at) they only pay monthly.

I just got another call for English teachers, from another one who accepts non-EU teachers and pays better than most. You are not going to have ANY problem finding work.

Just call me when you are ready to start having too much to do.
