"the man!"

Hey Rocinante, soooo glad you asked this question. Although the "old fashioned" classic barber shops are a dying art (everywhere in the world), personally I love them! I live on the Calle Cava de San Miguel just on the Plaza Mayor and I always go to the classic barber shop on Calle Cuchilleros on your left a bit down the street if you walk down the stairwell that exits the Plaza Mayor through the Arco de Cuchilleros onto Calle Cuchilleros. 360 Panoramic view of the Arco de Cuchilleros at www.multimadrid.com/panoramics/cuchilleros/cuchilleros.html . The barber shop is about 100meters down on the left just before you get to the world famous BOTN RESTAURANT. They cut (and shave) men only and have been there for over 100 years. It is EXACTLY what you are looking for. Last I was there a few months ago, a haircut was 1.200 pesetas (aprox. $6.50) and if you want a nice old fashioned shave it is another 800 pesetas ($4) , God I love Madrid! Saludos, jer...

Funny thing Rocinante, the place does not even have a name outside but ony the good old classic barber shop poll colors and a generic sign. It is however the best place I know for guys to get their cuts/shaves As for the advice asking without reciprocating, while my board is here for all who want to use it, some can offer more than others so do not feel pressured to "reciprocate" but during and after your trip if you feel like it, please come back and participate more on my forums with your new found knowledge and experiences . That is the best way to help others the same way members have helped you . Saludos, jer...

I just went to a regular peluquera when I was in Madrid and got the BALD look, which I love. I really don't trust anyone to trim my hair, so it all goes off. I'm just use to onle African-American males cutting my hair and no one else. Know that I can't find that in Spain, so BALD it is. Have a great day, Shawn

Hey gang, good to see this thread helping out. Went to the same place just before I left for NY last week to chop my flowing locks and look respectable for my family here. James is right, the priceis 8 Euros (1,331 of the old pesetas). Since they were charging 1,200 pesetas in Jan. 2002, that (130 pesetas) is not a bad hike considering the Euro came into play. Still a great price if ya ask me. Saludos, jer....

what about a place for women??? I do not want teh spanish mullet that is in "fashion" now, nor do i want 10,000 layers in my hair either. I am willing to pay a few extra bucks, but not too much. Has anyone gone to Jofer? I went there for waxing and they are great and cheap (as a recommendation for those of us who like the feeling of hot wax being ripped off of our skin). I paid 3 euros for a bikini wax (they call it ingles) and they were very clean and not painful . But i need my haircut and I am scared to get it done here. Help! PS: was the mullet ever in fashion???

My personal favorite is Nicholas, it's at metro Diego de Leon, if you get off the brown line (line 4), it's got a blue and yellow sign, walk ins completely welcome, pretty cheap, used to be 1000 ptas for a haircut, and my friend said it's pretty much the same now, in euros. It's on Conde de Pealver, one block away from the Diego metro stop, walking away from Francisco Silvela, and towards Goya. It will be on your right. It's great!!! I love it! And they also have waxing in their downstairs facility, also great and cheap! Hope that helps, Joy

This is such a great message board and has helped both me and my boyfriend out loads since we have been in Madrid. With regards to this particular thread, Sedusa has mentioned Jofer for some hot dripping wax . If you are still out there Sedusa - could you please let me know which one it was that you went to? Many thanks Mrs_C
