Maybe a dumb question at first...I know they have peluqueras and people do cut their hair in Spain, but what about classic barber shop places where I can get a cheap, short hair cut? Smiler

Hey Rocinante, soooo glad you asked this question.

Although the "old fashioned" classic barber shops are a dying art (everywhere in the world), personally I love them!

I live on the Calle Cava de San Miguel just on the Plaza Mayor and I always go to the classic barber shop on Calle Cuchilleros on your left a bit down the street if you walk down the stairwell that exits the Plaza Mayor through the Arco de Cuchilleros onto Calle Cuchilleros. 360 Panoramic view of the Arco de Cuchilleros at www.multimadrid.com/panoramics/cuchilleros/cuchilleros.html Big Grin . The barber shop is about 100meters down on the left just before you get to the world famous BOTN RESTAURANT. They cut (and shave) men only and have been there for over 100 years. It is EXACTLY what you are looking for.

Last I was there a few months ago, a haircut was 1.200 pesetas (aprox. $6.50) and if you want a nice old fashioned shave it is another 800 pesetas ($4) Big Grin , God I love Madrid!

Saludos,
jer...

Great piece of news! I know exactly where you're talking about and will go there when I need a trim Smiler

By the way for what it's worth I'd like to send out a general 'word up' for all the folks who take the time to respond to peoples inquieries, notably mine. I know it's easy to just ask and get info and then not recipricate, and a lot of the info I'm getting adds up to overall know how and piece of mind while planning my trip. Thanks to all of you who make this site worth while. Hasta la prxima. Cool

Funny thing Rocinante, the place does not even have a name outside but ony the good old classic barber shop poll colors and a generic sign. It is however the best place I know for guys to get their cuts/shaves Big Grin

As for the advice asking without reciprocating, while my board is here for all who want to use it, some can offer more than others so do not feel pressured to "reciprocate" but during and after your trip if you feel like it, please come back and participate more on my forums with your new found knowledge and experiences Smiler .

That is the best way to help others the same way members have helped you Big Grin .

I needed a haircut, so yesterday I did a search on these forums, figuring that someone had asked the same question before me. I found this thread and went to the place Jer recommended on Cuchilleros this morning.

Just what I was looking for - excellent.

The price is now EUR 8 by the way

I just went to a regular peluquera when I was in Madrid and got the BALD look, which I love. I really don't trust anyone to trim my hair, so it all goes off.

I'm just use to onle African-American males cutting my hair and no one else. Know that I can't find that in Spain, so BALD it is.

Have a great day,

Shawn

Hey gang, good to see this thread helping out.

Went to the same place just before I left for NY last week to chop my flowing locks and look respectable for my family here.

James is right, the priceis 8 Euros (1,331 of the old pesetas). Since they were charging 1,200 pesetas in Jan. 2002, that (130 pesetas) is not a bad hike considering the Euro came into play.

Still a great price if ya ask me.

what about a place for women??? I do not want teh spanish mullet that is in "fashion" now, nor do i want 10,000 layers in my hair either. I am willing to pay a few extra bucks, but not too much. Has anyone gone to Jofer? I went there for waxing and they are great and cheap (as a recommendation for those of us who like the feeling of hot wax being ripped off of our skin). I paid 3 euros for a bikini wax (they call it ingles) and they were very clean and not painful Smiler . But i need my haircut and I am scared to get it done here. Help!

PS: was the mullet ever in fashion???

My personal favorite is Nicholas, it's at metro Diego de Leon, if you get off the brown line (line 4), it's got a blue and yellow sign, walk ins completely welcome, pretty cheap, used to be 1000 ptas for a haircut, and my friend said it's pretty much the same now, in euros. It's on Conde de Pealver, one block away from the Diego metro stop, walking away from Francisco Silvela, and towards Goya. It will be on your right. It's great!!! I love it! And they also have waxing in their downstairs facility, also great and cheap! Hope that helps, Joy

I got my hair cut at a Jofer's, the one near Jose Abascal. It was inexpensive, but a disaster. I have "stiff" hair that if it's cut too short, gives me the Alfalfa look for months. Well, that's what the cute little girl cutting my hair did. Since I'm blind as a bat, I'm really at the barber's mercy when I sit in the chair and take my glasses off. I had to wait about a month before it grew out long enough so that I could go to a real peluqeria (old fashioned, definitely NOT unisex, etc.) where the barber made me look more presentable.

This is such a great message board and has helped both me and my boyfriend out loads since we have been in Madrid.

With regards to this particular thread, Sedusa has mentioned Jofer for some hot dripping wax Frowner . If you are still out there Sedusa - could you please let me know which one it was that you went to?

Many thanks
