This is an age old question. I have my bank account in a credit union in the States. So bank transfers for me always mean paying two transaction fees one from Spain to a US bank and then from the US bank to the credit union. To avoid the double transaction fee I was simply sending money to my parents through Western Union and my parents would deposit the money for me. But I got tired of their transfer fees too. So now I have gotten a second ATM card for my bank account here in Spain and sent it to my mother. Now I just ask her to withdraw money from my account here in Spain from an ATM in the States whenever the funds in my account there get low. She handles the rest. That works for me, but then again I have parents who are willing and able to do the transaction for me. Not sure that everyone is in the same situation.

I have transfered a lot of money back to the states in the last couple of years and have used wire transfers from BankInter to Bank of America having only the two pay one leg of the transfer each time. This fee that I was charged by my american back to receive the transfer was also a fixed fee which is obviously a lot better than a variable rate. I have had very god luck with BankInter... The other way I have done it is by bying Dollars at a very good moment from BankInter and bringing cash with me to U.S....With the strength of the EURO the longer you leave your money in Euros the better depending on your bank sit in the States.
