I am moving to Andalucia area next month and I have just found out there are new laws for keeping a horse in Spain. I am told my new house will need to be registered before I can keep my horse there. Could someone please tell me exactly what these laws are and how I get everything registered. I am begining to panic as i need to get everything sorted before i leave. She is vacinated against flu and tet already - does she need anything else? I also believe she needs to be microchipped- should i get her done before i leave the uk?
Any advice will be most gratefully recieved.

If you are coming from England it shouldn´t be a huge problem, as vet regulations are now supposedly uniform all over the EU. You will need to get the horse microchipped, make sure the vaccines are up to date and documented, and if you don´t already have an EU animal passport your vet should be able to provide one when the microchip is installed.

As for the stabling, I don´t know how enthusiastically they are enforcing these rules, and I think they are only meant for new builds. Even so, they are only what you´d expect in a reasonable barn, nothing absurd. No one´s going to kick out your horse, esp. if he comes in via France.

Thanks for the info, I will arrange to get her microchipped before we leave. There isn't actualy a barn on the property i am buying just a large field and I shall put up a field shelter until I can afford to build stabling. I have been told by an animal sanctuary that I need to go to the agriculture office within 48 hours of her arriving and register her presence in the country but she must be kept at a licenced property. What are your thoughts on that? I just want to keep her at home with me in a proper field with grass in the way she is accustomed with out landing in trouble.

You may be better off putting your horse in a local livery or boarding with a farmer for a month or so, until you get everything settled.

It all sounds scary, but don´t let "them" rattle you. Most of the ag. people in Spain are regular, decent people not out to get you.

There are a couple of expat horse-owner sites on the web who can give your specifics... plug in ´expat equine´ or ´Spain expat horse´ and they ought to come up.

(I just stable horses and donkeys overnight for passing pilgrims, deep in the heart of farm country. I don´t have an equine of my own. Yet.)
