1) goya is rumoured to have washed dishes at El Botin

2) the future queen of Spain, Doña Letizia was a journalist before marrying the prince of Spain

how about that bar/restaurant down the calle cuchilleros that is in the guiness book for being the oldest bar in the world? and there are cannon ball marks or somethingon the facade of that building too.

and the Mercamadrid Fish Market is the largest in Europe, and the second largest in the world (although I'm not exactly sure how they qualify largest- surface area? trade revenue? volume of goods?).

Candela:

I bought a really interesting book at the FNAC a few months ago-called Madrid Oculto. It has all manner of interesting and weird facts and stories about the city. You are welcome to borrow it if you want-it's in Spanish. Call me if you want to.....wendy

I have a book "Leyendas de Madrid" that has a few interesting stories, also in Spanish and you're also welcome to borrow it.
Another one that I can think of off the top of my head is Retiro park having the only known statue of the devil as Lucifer, the fallen angel. Although I believe that there is another on a rooftop somewhere in the Madrid de los Austrias.

yep, there is another on a rooftop. it´s right on the calle mayor. if you stand in the little intersection at the top of c/ cuchilleros, where there is a puerta to the plaza mayor and near the mercado san miguel (?), and look across the street (towards where the opera and palace would be), it is on the roof of the building there.

hope i didn´t confuse you, but it´s there smiler
