Hi all,

Our American accountant has vanished. As in, disappeared without a trace. We need someone dependable who knows how to file for citizens living abroad, with a minor complexity (rental property in the US and investment account).

Anyone have anyone they'd recommend?

Hey Juliette--
We have used a tax guy in DC (their office is in Adams Morgan) for many years and he always does a good job of creating order out of chaos. He has definitely saved us a lot of time and money.

He gives us a form to fill out with all of our expenses, income, etc. and takes care of the rest. We file as DC residents (not sure if you do or not) because our business is registered there. Anyway, here is his info:

Hi guys.

I am looking for an accountant as well. ( i think) basically i get tons of forms from the inland revenue and companies house a couple of times per year and quite frankly it takes me a whole weekend to get through one of them cry

I have no patience at all and they drive me loco. I keep accurate up to date records of all my expenditure and income so I just need someone to do the rest.

Spoke to a top Madrid based accountant the other day and they charge 135 euros per month, not sure I need to pay so much just to fill in a couple of forms a year, so do i have any other options?

In an ideal world I would like to send my balance sheets to someone once or twice a year and do nothing else.

Many thanks,

Dean

Listen, If it messes with your head that much, just pay the man and get it over & done with, I mean, who needs the headache when you can get it all gone through thoroughly, and have piece of mind knowing that it will all be done to perfection, without any omissions or errors, in which case they would just send the whole lot back to you again, and you'd have sit there and do it all again!!

In my honest opinion, I think it's much better (if you can afford it of course) to get a Tax expert to go through all your annual dealings, for a reasonable fee, better to be safe than sorry, because nowadays, the Revenue depts are really looking to screw people up, big time, so be careful with your declarations!!

Saludos y Salud.

SUBJECT: PUBLIC ANNOUNCEMENT TAX ASSISTANCE TOUR 2006 MADRID - MARCH 10, 13 & 14

It is tax time once again, and we are pleased to announce that a representative of the U.S. Internal Revenue Service will be providing assistance on US taxes in Madrid as follows:

Friday, March 10, 2006:
Telephone assistance from 14:30 pm to 17:00 pm in the Consular Section in the U.S. Embassy Madrid.

Monday, March 13, 2006
Walk-in assistance from 09:00 am to 17:00 pm in the Consular Section in the U.S. Embassy Madrid

Tuesday, March 14, 2006
Telephone assistance from 09:00 am to 17:00 pm in the Consular Section in the U.S. Embassy Madrid.

IRS has reduced the amount of time the taxpayer assistant will spend in Spain, so she will only be coming to Madrid. We want to ensure that as many people as possible can be assisted because of the limited time available. From our experience in previous years each person seeking assistance requires an average of ten to fifteen minutes. Realistically this means that we can only provide service to about 40 people on the walk-in day. People who cannot come to Madrid on March 13 should call 91-587-2251 before March 9 to leave their name and phone number for the IRS taxpayer assistant to call them back. We will provide the taxpayer assistant with the list of names and she will call as many of them as she has time for during the time she is in Madrid. Unfortunately, we are unable to arrange for a specific time during the two days for the return call. For further information, please call the American Citizens Services of the US Embassy at 91-587-2240

Well that's interesting, thanks C! I'm sort of knee-deep in doing our taxes in DC (Thanks M!) and think it'd be difficult to get the paperwork back over here, but for anyone who hasn't started yet it sounds great.

Is that help session at the embassy for filing US taxes? Or for helping with the declaración de la renta here?

Seeing as it´s the IRS at the US Embassy, I assume they´re only interested in getting dollars from Americans living in Spain, to take back to America.

You wanna be legal, but this looks like a good definition of ´dancing with wolves!´

hey Reb, you might want to checkout this posting by Booklady, (Posted 13 March 2003 04:44) and others, as it is jam packed with info concerning expats and what they need to know & they need to do about it, and is pretty extensive.

http://spaintalk.multimadrid.org/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/126...811012511#1811012511

I realize it doesn't exactly answer your question directly, but it does at least give you a much clearer picture of what you're dealing with, and some of the links on this forum I know for sure WILL point you in the direction of an accountant, who will I'm sure be well versed in these matters.

I personally have posted TONS of this stuff on this forum in the past few years, and I know for a fact that there are untold 'Links' within those posts which do contain the names and addresses of expat Tax specialists, some of whom were or still are located in Madrid.
