Can anyone recommend a good woman's hair dresser? I've tried several and haven't found anyone. It would be nice if they speak English, but it's not essential.

Katrina, always best to try a [search] SEARCH [search] first.

I did one on "hair cuts" and got a few good results.

The one tited "Hair" at http://www.multimadrid.com/cgi-bin/jersbbucgi/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=6;t=000083 even gives you one place (recommended by "harmless") that may do the English thang Cool

[search] SEARCH [search] and ye shall find! Big Grin

Please come back after your hair cut and let us know where you went and how it was, it is the only way to help others in your situation in the future.

Saludos,
jer...

I just wish they had one set price instead of charging you extra for the shampoo, conditioner, hairspray, comb, .... who knows what all they charge for and I wish they wouldnt allow smoking in the hair salons.

Hey mara, we "dudes" have it so much easier than you "dudettes" Big Grin :jeje:

The PLACE I GO TO charges 8 Euros for the whole deal although they have never shampooed me there, just wet the hair with a spritzer bottle and get to work.

Well this thread is 3 years old and the links are no longer valid and I am getting desperate for a hair cut.

Any suggustion for a hair cutting place?

I'm not too worried about my hair, a butchered hair cut grows out in a few weeks but the wife would take it personally. She wants an english speaking hair dresser

English speaking hairdressers? No.

Butchered haircuts? I've got your place...

In Calle Madera, between Callao and Tribunal metros's, there is a large hairdressing academy. Costs 2.50 for a standard cut, and since I only get my hair cut once or twice a year, I shell out another Euro as a tip. Leaves me with coin in my pocket for a happy meal smiler

Cheers,
Steve

hey Rob.

not for nothin man but with all this english, english, english you require i must ask if you are taking spanish lessons here in madrid? ok, i can understand the need for an english-speaking doctor but a haircutter roll eyes you are gonna have to learn spanish some day man! nah nah

good one Steve! i saw on the news the other day that there was a huge hairdressers conference at ifema last week. they mentioned that it is very hard to get "volunteers" to let them cut their hair (even for free) these days eeker

Rob, the place i go to is on calle cuchilleros. not sure of the number but if you walk down the starwell in the arco de los cuchilleros that leads down from the plaza mayor to the calle cuchilleros, it is on your left about 100meters down the street. it is just before you get to the "botín" restaurant. doubt much english is spoken but 9 euros for a good cut.

place is mens cuts only.

as for english-speaking cuts, saw an ad in the in-madrid last month (or this month?) for a travelling english-speaking hairdresser. pick up the paper and look through it.

saludos,
jer...

I was being a bit unfair to the young folk at the hairdressing academy. I have been more than happy with each and every cut I have had there. They have always followed my instructions the best they can... given my lack of lingo and reliance on hand signals!!

I just don't understand why - in an academy packed full with dozens of cute, young, Spanish girls - I always end up getting my hair cut by some poncy guy.

Oh, they wash your hair as well, for that 2.50.

Cheers,
Steve

yes to be fair, we start Spanish next week once I finish (or more correctly surivee) the TEFL course. Not so worried about my hair, worse that can happen is they butcher it, last place did that cut it too short and it took forever to grow out. Its the more the wife she'd prefer to be safe and get it cut in English untill she gets to the point where she can explain the difference (between a little and a lot)

I used have a hobby of going to hairdressers in different countries I visited, without speaking the language. It was such an adventure! I was always curious about hair salons in different countries, their different ways... I never worried about bad haircuts - with longer hair you just show that you want them to cut only 2cms and you're pretty safe.

Well we made the plunge went to the mall yesterday (drove, man oh man it was nice not having to take the bus big grin)n Walked by a cool salon and thought what the hell. And.... I can say it was a pleasant experience quite straight forward, best part was the price 43 euros for both of us. Half of what Chris would have paid in Germany just for her alone big grin

OUCH!!! that was the best part? eeker

did that include a 25 euro shopping spree at the mall? if not, it was a rip-off man.

as a general rule, try to avoid malls for haircuts, they tend to charge a LOT more than the normal haircutter.

did i mention the place i go to charges 9 euros.

remind me to get my hair cut before i leave if i ever go to germany.

Surprise, surprise! I finally went to get my hair cut yesterday, after at least six months. I had a class cancel yesterday so I went to the ABC Serrano mall on c/ Castellano to check out that pijo looking Louis Sacher salon(I think that was the name, it's on the first floor (not the ground floor). I was trying to explain to the shampoo girl that I only had an hour so if we had time I was up for the special conditioning treatment, but I guess I wasn't explaining myself very well. So she called over another hairdresser who asked me if I spoke English and it turned out she's Australian. Her name is Jessica and both her parents are Spanish and the whole family just moved over from Sydney 3 weeks ago. She speaks fluent Spanish but considers English as her first language. Anyway, I got exactly what I wanted in the haircut department. She cleaned up my layers but I got to keep my length. I think I paid around 35 euros but that was with shampoo and blow-out. The head massage that came with the shampoo was fab. Anyway for those of you still afraid to try a Spanish hairdresser this could be just what you were looking for.

I have to say, haircuts have been the biggest trial by fire for me since arriving in Spain. Ugh, I'll never forget my first visit, when the guy asked if I liked capas, and I had no idea but nodded...it was layers, and at the time my hair was all one length...you can imagine the tears after that one! (But eventually I decided I liked it and kept it that way LOL). It's taken years to feel comfortable at a salon and I still don't know everything they say.

No great point to this post other than my progress speaking Spanish in the salons is largely indicative of my progress in Spain in general, and it makes me happy. But if I could go back and start over, and be able to explain myself properly? I just might do it. wink

I keep my hair really short (in "capas") and have it cut every 2 or 3 months, so finding an excellent beautician in Madrid will be of prime importance!
