Hi

I have recently moved to Madrid and already the bookings for our small, tarrif-free family hotel are coming thick and fast!!

On the 1st May I have my sister arriving with her 14 yo son and 9 yo daughter for a few days stay. Neither they nor I have any idea how they are goiing to spend their time with us but I know that I unfortunately I shall have little time to be with them - they'll have to entertain themselves, mostly. None of them speaks any Spanish. My nephew is into usual teenage boy stuff - skateboards, terrible music, girls etc. My niece - who knows!??

Can anybody suggest any English-language resources/websites I can use to find things to do for them all or suggest anything that would be worth checking out during this period?

Any help would be appreciated

Thanks

hey MarkE, i remember many threads on what to do with kids in madrid so i did a search on "madrid with kids" and got 10 pages of great (and some not so related) results.

go to http://spaintalk.multimadrid.org/eve/forums?a=search&reqWords=madrid+with+kids&forum_scope=1851030511 to see the results page.

look through the threads that you think are interesting for you and skip the ones that are not.

you have your work cut out for you.

saludos,

Hi Mark,

You might consider recommending them going to visit the Museo Nacional de Ciencias Naturales. They have some very interesting material and there is a large portion dedicated to youngsters.

I think that the Museo del Arte de Reina Sofia, has a special program for kids under 18 on saturdays, which is pretty cool.

CosmoCaixa is always a sure hit, it's a science museum, and almost 100% interactive, the kids will love that.

You have the Planetario too, and you can also take them ice skating at the Palacio de hielo.

There's also El Parque de Atraccioens de Madrid, Faunia, and Warner Bros Park.

You can also take them for a boat ride over at the Retiro Park,

There's really plenty of stuff to do,

If I remember anything else, I'll let you know.

good stuff Albert!!! cool

MarkE, as far as getting around the city goes, one thing i recall being popular amongst people who had brought kids to visit madrid was the madrid vision bus open-top bus tour.

the doubledecker busses are fun for kids and they will also save parents a LOT of "mom/dad, my feeeeeet huuuuuuuurrrrt!!!".

also pretty inexpensive, all day passes for kids 7-16 yrs. old are just 7 euros and kids under 7 ride free smiler

more in english at www.madridvision.es/indexengland.htm

You should follow the same advice that I gave about cats. die laughing

No. Just kidding. What you should really do is swing by any of your local tourist offices and get a free copy of their monthly publication called 'Que Hacer - What's On'

Judging by the list of things that Albert suggested he has one and was just hitting the tip of the ice burg on the stuff listed there that you could do.

It also has a section just for children as well as sightseeing and museums with all of the hours, names, numbers, addresses, etc.

It may just end up salvaging your whole situation as the kids can pick what interests them out of this free guide book.

ok sue, now you be crazy (or lazy) wink

i know the board has changed but a search is still a search search nutz (and for the record, the search function on the new board is one of the VASTLY improved ones).

it took me about 6 seconds to find it at http://spaintalk.multimadrid.org/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/1651030511/m/8891081511

what scares me even more about your not being able to find it is that you even posted on the thread as well nah nah

sue.

the search facility is under the main menu where it says "Find". you used the search ok but if you are on a specific forum, the default option of "Search current forum only" is checked off under the search box where you put in the text to look for (in this case "cats in madrid").

since this is the " madrid links, links and más links" forum, it makes sense that no results for those words would come up if you left the "Search current forum only" box checked before you did the search.

ok, do this. try it again. click "Find" and then put "cats in madrid" into the "Keyword Search" box that drops down. BUT THIS TIME UNCHECK THE "Search current forum only" BOX BEFORE YOU HIT THE Go BUTTON TO PERFORM THE SEARCH. it will search in all forums that way and you will get tons of great results.

by the way, the old search form (but improved) is at http://spaintalk.multimadrid.org/eve/forums?a=srchf and you can get it by simply clicking "Find" on the main menu of any forum page and then "Advanced Search". that will open the complete search page (the one you are used to) in the whole browser window brews

Sorry to hear about your kitty-search traumas Sue...hope that you get there in the end! I am intrigued why you (in Lanzarote) would want to search for cats in Madrid but its amusing to speculate!! But sinbce we are on the subject (!) just about the only thing my 30 month old daughter seems to miss most about life in UK is cats - we were used to every other house having cats over there. She loved them to the point where we had to make specific trips around our neighbourhood to go and stroke the local moggies! The only cats I have seen here seem to be somewhat feral in appearance and neither hygienic nor appealing to a toddler.

Anyway thanks to all for the useful advice about entertaining kids. What worries me now is that there is sooooooooooooo much to see and do they will all want to keep coming back for weeks at a time!!

sue, don't get so down on yourself.

the thread was NOT started by Rocco but rather by Juliette, that is why you did not spot it in the search results.

it was the one entitled "Moving my cat to Spain" and Rocco simply had an absurd comment on the first page which became a running joke.

anyone who takes the time to get used to the new board software will see that is is FAR SUPERIOR to the old and has tons of cool new functions/features.

Modigy, you have to read the thread http://spaintalk.multimadrid.org/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/1651030511/m/8891081511 to appreciate it fully die laughing
