Hi

I'm a New Zealander who is about to leave Spain after 2 years.
I'm wondering if anybody knows of a company which can send stuff from Spain to NZ, at a reasonable rate. It's not a lot, probably just one big box.

Thanks for your help.

Polly,

When I left Spain in 2001, I sent my things in a couple of small boxes to the US, by regular mail at the post office. It was cheaper than what I was quoted at some of the smaller shipping companies, and that was after they quoted me the student rate.

The only way is to take the box around, get them to weigh it and see which price is the best.

GOOD LUCK,

Shawn

If you look at http://www.correos.es/ and select
Productos, you can see their rules about size and weight, and the prices too.

Looks like 20kg is the maximum (FWIW its 30kg out of the UK though I guess that may depend on the destination). Stephen

Hi polly, I am with Shawn on this one, I too used "Correos" as it were to send a few boxes of heavy stuff (ie. books) back to the U.S.A. after I studied here for a year.

I shipped with the post office via the looooooong boat and it took 5 weeks to arrive in NY from Madrid. That was ok since I was expecting it to take 6-8 weeks which was what I was quoted. I also shipped the stuff a month before my flight home as my course was over and I was going to travel before I went home to start a "real" job.

Airmail was NOT an option for me as the boxes were small but HEAVY.

I have found that couriers and shippers here in Spain are expensive so I would recommend you use the postal service.

This is true as well. I am not sure where in Spain you are polly but if you are in Madrid, the place to take bigger boxes is "Puerta N" (Door N) at the main post office (Cibeles). Door N is not the main entrance but rather around the side of the building (right side as you are facing the main door), on "Calle Montalban". This is where all the special sections of the post office are and they will weigh and give you a price.

The problems with shipping companies is that they have a minimum rate (1 ton/m3), so you have pay for a small package the same that 1000 kgs, but if you have a lot of m3 would be better by sea.

Polly,

Please come back and report on your findings and what you had to do to send your package back. This information will help others who have to do the same thing.

Have a great day,

Shawn

As per....it may not be the same from mainland as it is from the Canaries, but I am in the process of sending the rest of my daughters belongings to her in Dublin.

You do not need to take a full container, if you dont mind waiting for your stuff. The cargo companies here will store your stuff until they have a full container load and so you only pay for the m3 that you actually send. No storage charges either while you wait for the shipment to go!! There is no point in giving you prices here as they will not be relevant to the mainland, but maybe the process is the same??

Hi Polly,

I used the post office to send a whole lot of stuff from Salamanca to Sydney a few months ago, and it was a whole lot easier than having to deal with a shipping or freight company.

An XL box from the PO costs only a couple of euros, and I filled it up with books and clothes which came to 20kg ( actually just over, and they enforce the 20kg very strictly - they made me take a couple of things out to get it down to 20kg). It cost around 60 euros to send as registered mail and took about 2 months to get to Sydney, so I guess it would be about the same for NZ.

I later had the joy of dealing with a freight company at the airport (excess baggage dramas with Lufthansa - they tried to make me pay 500 euros for having 28 kg of luggage instead of 20 kg). It was a nightmare involving hunting down a shipping agent during siesta and filling in mountains of paper work, and eventually cost me about 110 euros to send an 8kg bag. Of course the advantage is that it got to Sydney only a couple of days after I did, which was just as well or i wouldn't have had any summer clothes at all! Of course the more that you freight the cheaper it is, so I guess it just depends on how quickly you need the stuff that you are sending.

If you need any more info, feel free to contact me.

Sally

Hey there guys! Just want to let you know I think shipping via the post office is best. I sent a huge box back to the US before leaving Madrid in December. It was going to cost me $150 extra bucks at the airport it i stuffed all that stuff in my suitcase. (I know they jack the prices up, but I am stills ure the 45 euros is a lot cheaper then most.)

6 weeks later i got my box, and in fine condition. I have to agree with Jer and the rest on the shipping.

I just sent 5 boxes to Los Angeles from Federal Express. In Madrid they use Chrono Express. They were right on time, took like 2 seconds to make the appointment, and they boxes got to my parents in less than 1 week. I have NO idea how much it will cost, but I know it's not that cheap. My cousin works for FedEx so we get a discount, but 1 box should not be that expensive. You can also schedule an appt online at fedex.com. They are more pricy than other places, but you can track your package and I had NO wories my stuff would get lost, unlike with regular mail.

The only problem I had with FexEx was with the pick up guy who went to the bathroom at my apartment. When I walked by I got an unwelcome glimpse of his FedEx "package" as he was peeing with the door OPEN!!! Yeah, didn't need that at 9am. Eeker Eeker Eeker

Yikers!!! Tevia, I have a feeling that FedEx is VERY expensive for that type of shipping, especially since they use a volume/weight formula to calculate rates and boxes are high volume Eeker Eeker Eeker
