Hi Stryker...I have to say I generally never respond to your types of posts. Why? Too general. A cool bar in Madrid? That could take a few hundred pages of posts and of course it depends on what you mean. An Irish bar? A techno enclave? An all night drum and bass gig? Flamenco until the wee hours? Live jazz? Maybe blues? A bit of revolutionary hard rock? An arabic tea house? A sushi/sake bar?

Anyway, I think you get my point. However you did give one clue...sangria. For the money and the atmosphere, Las Cuevas del Sesamo is the best. It is on C/Principe, right near Sol in the heart of the Huertas party district. You enter through a long mirrored hall, go downstairs and find yourself seated at a tiny table in a white painted cave. All they serve here is sangria...6 euros for a small jar, 8 for a large. A small will yield about 6 little glasses. If you are lucky the piano player will be around playing requests and old hits. If not you can amuse yourself by reading the quotes painted all over the walls. It is a very cool place and a very traditional Madrid place. My best friend's parents courted here back in the sixties! YOu will love it.
