I am NOT a dancer (have 4 left feet ) but I have seen an ad in my CLASSIFIEDS SECTION (sponsored by InMadrid) under the "clubs-general" heading that reads...
quote:
CLUB MADRISALSEROS. Whether you're passing through on holiday or resident in Madrid, join us for salsa practice sessions and venture out to Madrid's salsotecas. Tel: 679 84 96 51. Web: www.salsa-es.com
Looks laid back but I have never gone, maybe you should check it out.
If you do go or find a good place, please come back and let us know here.
Also, from what Salsa dancers/fans have told me in the past, you should not feel silly, the most important thing is to try and enjoy yourself.
Go to Ombu, its a small bar/disco in huertas, Santa Maria #36, Metro Anton Martin. I have been there many times for classes (they're free) the owner and instructer is very nice. Its very casual and all you really should do, (since they are teaching you to dance) is order a drink- it can be soda (I've done that too).
The place is small, but its nice, and the times I've gone, the nights they have class always seems to draw more people as the night goes on. I'd stop by and ask which nights they hold classes, as they change from time to time and I wouldn't want to tell you to show up the wrong day!
Good luck and keep those feet moving!

For Salsa learning you will need a lot of time to practice. It is the king of the Caribbean dances and the hardest to learn. Beware, what you heard at el Son was not Salsa but three different music/dances: Salsa, Merengue and Bachata. You will need at least 2 months of hard work before not looking like a beginner. If you have the time dont have a doubt, go for it, there are dozens of places in Madrid to dance.
You can find many academies at La guia del Ocio and there is this guy who teaches in English: Sthephen: 639528150
There is a new club called EH in Callao on C/ Estrella (walk up where the Mc Donalds is), who offers slasa classes on Thursday's. The price is 5euros. The club is super swanky, but relaxed. A good atmosphere. The owner speaks English too. And they have a "special" happy hour and 2 drinks for 10 euros!!!
