Today, aside from the ETA bomb that hurt 19 and nearly killed 1, the 40 year old Palacio de Deportes (Sports Palace) of Madrid burnt to the ground . They believe that the fire was caused by a spark from the welder of one of the workers setting up for a concert tonight. Although I did not frequent it much I did enjoy the last Smashing Pumpkins concert before their break up and "retirement" there. The "Palacio", aside from being the home of the popular basketball team "Estudiantes", was one of the main concert halls in the city and was often used as a conference center as well. p.d. The only good thing that comes from this is that the "River Dance" concert that was coming was cancelled so the lords of the dance will have to look for a new stage.
Oh,no! I lived right across the street from the Palacio de Deportes when I was an exchange student in 1962. Los trotamundos de Harlem(Harlem Globetrotters) were the feature that summer, but I didn't go...
Hey, whatchoo got against Irish Dance? Granted that the originator, Michael Flatley from CHICAGO(!)is an egomaniac. Nevertheless, it is an awesome art form(and they even work in some Flamenco(stomp-stompity-stomp is the same in all languages)

Sad , the last time I was there in its glory days was to see the final concert of the last tour date of the Smashing Pumpkins before they broke up, perhaps the break up was an omen of what was to come!
Saludos, jer...
p.d. The photos above are a lot more impacting when you think that it was a covered indoor stadium.
Waaah! There goes the neighborhood! And with reference to that, will they be making the euro coins at the Casa de la Moneda, right across the street(kitty-cornerish) from the old Palacio? It will be interesting to see the migration of euros around Europe, sort of like the quarters with state reverse sides here. At least I think that's how they'll work.

Hey Sue, actually I saw a documentary a few weeks back about the Euro project since its start in 1997. The guy who won the design contest is Australian and the current Euros were all coined and printed at the "ECB" ("European Central Bank") and then transported via train and truck to the 12 different countries, what a huge process !
I thnk it will be a while before we begin to see other country's Euro coins floating around in quantity.
