but Roland, Osama Bin Laden's manifesto does not speak of Isreal,
Maybe you're reading the expurgated version. Red Face

From the fatwa entitled "Declaration of War against the Americans Occupying the Land of the Two Holy Places." by Osama bin Laden first published in Al Quds Al Arabi, a London-based newspaper, in August, 1996:

"Utmost effort should be made to prepare and instigate the Ummah against the enemy, the American-Israeli alliance- occupying the country of the two Holy Places..."

"Division of the land of the two Holy Places, and annexing of the northerly part of it by Israel. Dividing the land of the two Holy Places is an essential demand of the Zionist-Crusader alliance."

"Your brothers in Palestine and in the land of the two Holy Places are calling upon your help and asking you to take part in fighting against the enemy --your enemy and their enemy-- the Americans and the Israelis."

That and many other interviews, tapes, messages, etc. all bear anti-Israeli sentiments. If you'd like to read more about it, I suggest reading this page.

I would much rather have a rational neighbor with a cellar full of fire arms than meet some lunatic in the metro with a switchblade!
Except that your "rational" neighbor has just gone and machine-gunned a low rent district, killing many innocent bystanders, yelling "He's got a gun!", and now blames it on the excuse that the thug there was giving him the finger.

The lunatic on the metro with the switchblade may be more immediately dangerous to you but to society as a whole he is far less dangerous than Mr "Rational" with his unsettling fascination for guns.

Mainly because one group has the power to cause far greater death and destruction than the other. I don't know about you but I generally am more concerned about the machine gun pointing at me than the switchblade. [/qb]
So we should back off and leave them alone until they've accumulated as much power?

Hey Roland...i knew that manifesto existed - the one you mention in an above post. But his prior opinions didn't mention Isreal at all. I had always taken that later one that came out of London as a convenient switch of views in order to take advantage of the general M. East ire with the Palestinian/Isreal situation.

Weapons are the tools of violence
all decent men detest them.

Weapons are the tools of fear;
a decent man will avoid them
except in the direst necessity
and, if compelled, will use them
only with the utmost restraint.
Peace is his highest value.
If peace has been shattered,
how can he be content?
His enemies are not demons,
but human beings like himself.
He doesn't wish them personal harm.
Nor does he rejoice in victory
or delight in the slaughter of men.

He enters a battle gravely,
with sorrow and with great compassion,
as if he were attending a funeral.

CNN is communist? I didn't know that. I thought CNN was a huge broadcasting network, owned by an even huger multinational media corporation called TimeWarner, which was, the last time anyone looked, chock full of rampant capitalists raking in loads of cash and presenting the same pandering nonsense as the rest of the networks.

Wow! Since they're communists maybe I should start watching it and I could see news with a different viewpoint.

Yes they did. If you bother to check the link I provided on Osama Bin Laden you'll find interviews, manifestos, and other statements made by him that are chock full of references to Israel and their US alliance and his grievances thereof well before the manifesto.

Yeah, that's right. The nice old Christians kicked out the Muslims so they could get on with their peaceful activities.

The Spanish Inquisition was just a friendly Catholic reminder to the forgetful to show up on time to mass murder.... ooops sorry.... I meant Mass.

And we can thank God that the nice old Christians kicked out the nasty Muslims in time to rape and pillage.... oh... I'm sorry.... gently convert the New World to christianity and give God all their treasures which the Pope and his friends would humbly keep safe for Him until he returns in the Second Coming? And let's not forget all those happy natives that the guise of Christianity helped usher into the joys of slavery. Ah those stylish shackles, that gourmet gruel, those chic chains.

And thanks to having kicked out Islam and their silly notions of hygiene we get to experience the joys of disease such as the Black Death. Ah those postules! They just light up the face, don't they. And thanks to all those intrepid conquerors, missionaries and such carrying smallpox and other friendly diseases to countless millions of natives all over the world.

We can also thank those that used Christianity as a club for the hundreds of years of enforced ignorance. "And that my liege is how we know the Earth to be banana shaped." Where would we be today if the Pope and the church hadn't suppressed those stupid ideas that we're not the center of the universe. Perhaps exploring the universe?

Yeah thank god Christians have kept those Muslims in line. We'd miss out on all the fun of witch-burnings, auto-da-fes, Crusades, World Wars, and so much more.

Ah ignorance is such bliss.

yes, much evil has been done in the name of Christ.
And Allah, of course.
And think of all those poor shmucks who lived in Jericho, when Joshua "fit the battle" there and slaughtered every living thing, including donkeys, cows, dogs, women, and other perfectly good property!...Good ol' Jehovah dunnit!

(Roland, I especially enjoyed the plague "postules!" I know you meant "pustules," but the resonance with "apostolate" was delicious...You put the pus in Apostle!)

This particular argument goes nowhere, as religion is at its essence divisive, and humans who decide to check their brains at the temple/mosque/church-door sometimes become, in their hearts, self-justifying brutes.

Excellent humans create beautiful faiths and religions. And those who come along later twist them into horror shows. Or racist chat-radio rants. Or revisionist "histories."
