hey all.

i think the company that Roland and Jules had a nightmare with was wanadoodoo (learning from Rocco here die laughing) but can't be sure.

also, i thought that you had major probs with wanadoo too Candy but now i read it was ya.com eeker

Wendy, it is the luck of the draw. i have 2 adsl lines with ya.com and love them both, have since the start. they were both turned on within 10 days of ordering and i changed them both from telefonica. my bill with the basic telefoinca landline is about 55 euros a month, only 15 less than that of Candy who has telefonica but you also have to keep in mind the speeds of the adsl you are considering getting.

as for the adsl instalation. don't take this the wrong way but i have seen your techy skills so i think you might want to pay to have them setr up the router and all die laughing either that or bribe a tech savvy board member to come over to your place and help you.

as for the auna cable service, my friend has what lena has but with internet too. the package is at http://www.aunacable.es/weblogic/webco/wc/WCini?wc_pest..._misc=yes&wc_vista=C and he says he is happy with it.

Wendy, no, last i looked the auna cable services were not available for my address here in the plaza mayor. if you go to http://www.distribuidores.aunacable.es/servlet/DCallesCL , you can plug in your street name and address and they will tell you the auna services that are currently avaialable to you.

when i plugged in "calle rollo" and used number 5 (since i do not know what number you are at), it said that only their phone service is available.

my address shows phone and internet available but no cable. it has been like that for over 2 years so i am not hopeful they will have cable available here any time soon.

same thing goes for my office address, internet and phone available but no cable.

so, while lena can get their cable service, we cannot as we are in the dead center of the city and as far as i know she lives a bit further out.

also, i am not sure you want to get a paid cable deal when the tdt service is free and already here (see THIS THREAD).

by the way, now wanadoo is also trying to sell the 20 mega adsl + free calls service and they are offering it for 20 euros/month until jan. 06 but then it goes up to 42 euros/month.

personally, i would not wish wanadoo on my worst enemy but if anyone is interested, see http://internetyllamadas.wanadoo.es/adsl20mbyllamadasdirecto24h/

seems odd that the 20 megas does not exist in madrid but everyone is selling it. will someone "in the know" please clear this all up cry

jer...

Jer,

Thanks for doing all this investigation! I did look into both Ya and telefonica-both offered 1 mb and ya offers 4 mb also-but don't know if that is real or not since you espressed scepticism at anything over 2mb. I don't know what kind of router telefonica provides-I couldn't find the info on their site.

As for my techy skills big grin -I do believe if we review the facts, while I could not resolve my laptop issue at the hostal, neither could Fabrizio nor the crappy "technician" sent by the hostal nor, umm, you! nah nah But I appreciate everyone trying so hard!

I got skills you ain't seen yet! die laughing

hey Wendy.

wow eeker wow

telefonica will give you a far inferior router than ya.com, that i know for sure.

telefonica likes to give you a crappy generic router with their logo on it which also makes it impossible to fnd the make and model in case yoy have probs. later and need to look online for support info since telefonica support is garbage.

ya.com used to give away the best router of al of the adsl providers, the 3com office connect 11g firewall router but looking now i see that they only offer that router with their "adsl 4mb voz" package. the "adsl 512 voz" package comes with a normal (no wifi) and inferior "d-link" router.

i know you were thinking about the 4mb deal so that should not affect you as you would get the 3com wifi router.

by the way, make your decision wisely since in the past, ya.com offered all of their packages with no minimum contract duration but now i see they require you stick with them for 1 year min.

this means that if you do not like the service, "tough titty" die laughing

check with telefonica and any others you are considering to see the min. contract duration as some have and others do not.

re the over 2 mb thang. i simply meant that for the average user (e-mail, web surfing, etc...), 2 mb is plenty. no need to go nuts and look for 4, 6, 10, 20 megs unless you are a download fiend (movies, etc...) but if you are starting from zero and the 4, 6, 20 meg price is the same, why not!

i am an above average internet user but do not do any major downloading and my 2mb at the office and 4mb at home are perfectly fine.

the whole 4, 6, 10, 20 and god knows what is to come offer thang reminds me of the website hosting industry. web hosting has gone nuts with the amt. of space they offer in hosting packages. each host is always trying to offer more mb than the others and everyone is like, "wow, these guys offer 1gb of web space!!!" when they do not realize that the average personal or business presencial website (just to have a web presence and show peeps you are there) uses about 1 or 2mb between the html pages and images so VERY few people need 500mb or 1gb.

Je Je Je die laughing

Once again, you are a font of knowledge-excellent points-the commitment factor and quality of the router. I am not finding anything on the telefonica offer about a contract-though I do see it on the ya.com site. And while you can still see there 1MB offer, I called them and they claim it doesn't exist anymore......

Just followed your old link from the best ADSL offers (as you told me to! see, I follow directions!)

http://acceso.ya.com/ADSLllamadas/1mb

But, even though the link is still live, they now require contracts for everything (at least according to the woman I reached).

I will say this for them-I called and she answered on the first ring. Try THAT with AT&T! nah nah

right, they must have left that page up by mistake.

their current homepage has no reference of nor link to the 1mb nor the 2mb package, just the 512 and 4mb.

they should remove those old pages or redirect them to the new ones though.

anywhooooz, why would anyone want the 1mb deal if the new 4mb one costs less (rhetorical question, no need to answer big grin).

Hi Guys, I'm always on the go, and recently don't have much time to check out what's going on at mm, but just read this thread, and although i may be late, telefonica has a special deal in which they don't charge you the installment fee (150€). I requested it recently and in about 7-10 working days had it installed. A friend who works in telefonica set me up with the deal, if you are still interested let me know and I'll see what he can do for you.

They have a lot of no fee options on their website and only available there-not available in their stores. Anyway, they finally showed up yesterday, just when I had decided to let it go and not stress that it was going to take them FOREVER. It actually took them 12 biz days-so I guess I was on the luckier end of things. And then they showed up twice!

And now, Jer, are you still recommending ya.com as a better choice for ADSL because of the equipment (the prices end up being almost the same). And do they do installation? Or do I need to throw myself on the mercy of the board for that? big grin

caveat: We are still waiting for Wanadoo to install our ADSL 2 weeks after putting in the request.

When I called Telefonica they told us that the maximum they offer was 1Mbps download 256Mbps upload for essentially 50€ a month. That sucks. Really.

Jazztel were so incompetent with the process of signing up that we gave up. That plus the seeming incompatibility between our Telefonica contract and Jazztel's.

Wanadoo when it's installed works well, except for their lack of impetus in updating modem drivers for new Mac system software. We've had relatively few problems with Wanadoo service in the past but the problems we have had have taken EONS to fix. mad

As for whether 20 Mbps is too much, that all depends. If you are addicted to a certain television show that is impossible to get over here then 20 Mbps is just the right speed to get that show. And yes, there are legal ways to get those shows (http://www.ultimateTVshows.com)
I agree with Jer that storage these days far exceeds most people's needs. Download speeds are only just getting near that point. If you want to view a high quality downloaded video within a reasonable timeframe, 20 Mbps is right around the happy comfortable spot.

I'm hoping in the very near future you'll be able to see newly released movies available for viewing (legally) via Internet since here in Spain certain movies *cough*Serenity*cough* couldn't be found in VOS here in Madrid. 20 Mbps will make this possible.

hey Wendy.

yes, i still recommend ya.com.

no, as far as i know they do not offer installation (not even paid).

they send you the router and activate your line and the installation is up to you.

pretty easy really so i would not fret.

Hi Roland,

Sorry to bust your bubble, but that website does not provide a legal download service. Actually I would say it is more of a rip-off than anything else.

The only thing they are supposedly charging you is for the online support and tutorial, but no where does it state that they guarantee that they will offer you copyrighted material or that their sources have already paid their copyright fees. If you check at the bottom of the page it warns you about file sharing copyrighted material and states that the purchase of the membership does not entitle you to a license to upload or download copy righted material.

I would say that they are going to give you a few p2p client programs which are free to down in the first place. Probably using a torrent protocol.

And second, the sources for the torrent download links are available totally free of charge on many websites, which don't require any money or registration.

Roland, you do whatever you want, but paying for something which is already free and which you are going to end up downloading illegally anyway is not too smart.

Ok, two weeks of waiting for ya, and Saturday they sent me an email saying they can't do it unless I disconnect my current ADSL-which I DO NOT HAVE! Spoke to them and told them to forget it, it's not working. Although, in their favor, they did at least try to let me know the status of things after two weeks. Called Telefonica and they just called to tell me they are delivering the equipment TOMORROW!!!!!!! So, I think it will be connected once I set everything up(I hope!) WOO HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! brews

Well, we finally received our Telefonica wireless router today and managed to install without any configuration whatsoever. Neither the router nor the computer had to be configured. I simply plugged the router into the outlets, pushed a single button on the back of the router and voila! Instant Internet.

However, it's currently running COMPLETELY open to all as "Default". If I want to protect it from others then I'll have to run the installer which, in the typical Telefonica way, is PC only.
