I used to live in Canada, and some but not all US 800 numbers would work in Canada. If it's really important I could call some of my family that still lives up there, and get them to give it a try.

well, since it seems that you are the only canadian (or ex) on this board (hard to believe), it is important.
really should be no big deal, if it works, it will be a free call so will cost them nothing and if it does not work, it will cost them nothing as well.
tell them they should get an answering machine if all works well.
