Anyone help me? My husband has just purchased a laptop in the States (Toshiba Satellite P15-S409), and is trying to link onto the internet via my ISDN line, and cant! Any very untechnical advice welcome Smiler

We have managed to access the internet on the "ordinary" phone line using the internal modem on the laptop.

Where are you trying to connect to the internet using the ISDN /RDSI ?
If you are in Spain you have to sign up with telefonica and they will ask you if you want to sign up for their RDSI internet service where they will split your signal into 2 channels of 64 each.
One channel for the phone and one channel for the internet.
The newer option is to sign up for ADSL over your RDSI with telefonica who will explain the process when they take your order.
My suggestion if you are just trying to be able to speak on the phone / fax and surf the net at the same time is to bypass the ISDN / RDSI all together and just add a new regular phone line and then later add ADSL to this new regular line taking advantage of a "Auto instalable" kit that any one of the Telefonica or competitors will offer you based on your needs.
Rocco.

Hi Rocco, thanks for answering!! I have an RDSI line to my PC here at home in Lanzarote, and use ya.com on their TarifaPlana24. My husband has just bought this laptop, so we unplugged the cable from my PC and stuck it in his laptop, set up the internet connection as the same as my PC, but the laptop wont connect to the ISP. Are we missing a vital piece of software, or a card or something. As I said the laptop will connect via the internal modem on the "ordinary" phone line, but it is very slow, especially as he wants to be connected to download music!!!!

This may be a very silly question too, but will we be charged for him connecting via the dialup?

If I'm not mistaken, Ya.com sent you some software that you installed on your original desktop machine. If you still have that CD, you can try installing it on your husbands Laptop. With you username and password, he should be able to access the internet, no problem.

If you don't have the cd, log into Ya.com's customer page HERE using your desktop. You might be able to download the needed software, and then transfer it to the laptop.

Short of that, you can call them and simply tell them that you bought a repacement computer - i might suggest telling them it's a replacement and not an addition, so they don't try and charge you for 2 machines; i'm not sure they will try to do this, but some ISP's in the states sure have -

anyway, I've called them in the past and they have been very helpful.

I think that's about it - you should be up and running in no time.

I hope this helps
Good luck

I know you said don't offer any super techy advice, but this is a pretty simple thing to do... after you have your current problems ironed out - you could install something like A Wireless Router/Firewall/LAN or something like it.

1. It provides a wireless or hard wired network
2. It provides Firewall security to your system(s)
3. It would allow you to simply PLUG IN any other computer to your network, and very simply share your ISDN line - just like you're trying to do now. If you had this already, your hubby could have just plugged and played.

Good luck!

Would this be right!!! Confused My son (in UK) says that basically we cannot access the ISDN line through the laptop because we need an ISDN card?

Yep, that's right! You must have an ISDN card/modem connected to or in your pc?

>This may be a very silly question too, but will we be charged for him connecting via the dialup?

Usually, unless you have some special package with an ISP set up.
