Hello,
I am arriving in Madrid at the beginning of Sept. I was curious as to what the best options were for cell phone usage in Spain? I have a phone that I think can be "unlocked" and used there, but I am not sure what companies have the best value. Thanks!
Emily

hi EmilyRuth, Angie is right-on about the search thang!!!

cell phones have been discussed heavily on this board, please do a SEARCH on "cell phones", "cellphones", "mobile phones" and read through the resulting threads.

Angie is also right-off Red Face on the cell company to use here, movistar is the MOST EXPENSIVE and no longer worth the diff. in price as it used to be many moons ago. i recommend vodafone for the best overall bang for your buck

there is a good page at www.spainsim.com/requirements.htm that you should read.

i am closing this topic as to not have yet another repeated thread on cell phones in spain.

please continue discussion on one of the other threads.

saludos,
jer...

Topping up your prepaid cell/mobile

This maybe nothing new to old timers but I didn't know this. If you have a prepaid phone you can top it up at any Caja Madrid banking machine. Pop in your bank card and choose english and your off to the races big grin Particularly handy if your Spanish isn't up to doing it in person.

hey Rob.

no reason for the thread to be closed since the info is still valid. threads only close if i close them.

it is not just caja madrid, all banks machines offer the service.

doing it via the bank machine howevert is not always instant, it can take up to 24 hours to get the money on your phone, making it the worst way to top-up.

i have said it before and i will say it again man, you are going to have to learn spanish some time. besides, a monkey (non-spanish speaking) could easily add credit to a spanish pay as you go mobile at any shop, it could not be easier to say...

"recarga" + "number here (amt. of credit you want to add)" + "euros" + "your mobile company (vodafone, movistar, orange" + "por favor" die laughing

I agree, I've been pushing myself to get moving on the Spanish, I've survived this long without it but it's getting to be a hassle. Time to get my but in gear nutz
