If I am moving to Spain is it worth bringing along my workhorse PC from the USA with all my files and stuff on it? Will it work OK there, or will all the differences in current, interface, communications software, media, etc. (and possibly import duty payments) make it more practical to just buy a new Mac when I get there?
I understand electronics are WAY expensive there, but I want to weigh the options.

Thanks, Rebekah

hey rebrites.

i assume you are talking about an laptop since noone in their right mind would consider lugging a desktop over here from the states nah nah wink big grin

seriously though, it looks like you are asking about a desktop mac, right?

sell it there before you leave and buy one here, they are reasonable priced here. see www.apple.com/es/ for a general idea.

just load all of your files on an external hd and bring that for when you get a new set up and can load them onto it.

software is software so all of your existing mac software will be fine on the mac you get here.

saludos,
jer...

hey rebs...i hope this means you are on your way!!!

i agree with jer....prices at apple.es are comparable to the us. for the most part it seems they just transfer prices to euros. if it is 199dollars, then it is 199 euros BUT..the euro price includes taxes. so, in the end you save money. i recently ordered an ipod through apple.es and it was easy-peasy, i paid less than if i had bought it stateside, and it arrived in 4 days. then when it broke, i logged onto the web, filled in a form and in two days they sent out the box to use for mail in repairs. 1 week later i had a new ipod.

you could by a maxtor ext hard drive, load all onto there. sell your mac desktop, and then order your new laptop here.

several board members are mac experts, mainly roland, so i am sure he can advise you on dealing with macs here.

Of course it's more complicated than all that.

Seeing as I'm changing EVERYTHING when I move to Spain, I thought this would be an ideal time to switch from IBM/Windows (The Dark Side) to Mac.
My workhorse is indeed a desktop, a big honking screen and a huge hard drive with all my taxes, contacts, even a couple of novels-in-progress on it!
Any idea how to make the switch without tearing out what hair is left? (I am presently dealing with both UK inland revenuers and US IRS...)

And yes, dear Candy, I am on my way! We arrive in mid-June. I suspect an army of bureaucrats is sharpening its pencils even now, in anticipation! cry

Hope everyone is well in Madrid!
