Thought I'd ask here... Does anyone know how long it takes to switch a phone number from one mobile company to another?

I have a pay-as-you-go thing from Telefonica and I want to a switch to a Vodafone contrato.

when i did it from amena to vodafone a year ago it took about 20 days.

i did it at the phone house and took advantage of an offer to get a free phone.

they request the migration ("portabilidad") of the number and then you get text messages keeping you updated on the progress, one when the request goes through and a few more telling you the date that the changeover will occur.

on that date, you will find your phone has no service and that is when you need to go pick up your new SIM card from the shop.

Thanks jer--
Question: If I get a new phone from Vodafone when I sign up for a contrato, can you unlock it before the switchover happens?

yes, i can unlock phones but in your case it is a moot point since they will not hand over the new phone until your line has been transferred over and you go pick up the new SIM.

they will set the phone you choose aside but you can't touch it until the end of the process cry

Ah, I didn't realize that. That's what I get for procrastinating. Okay, then I guess I'll just have to unlock my crappy phone and take it to the US...

It's a sony ericsson T290i... the one that is shaped like a brick!

I'm thinking that I might just keep it as a pay-as-you-go phone and then get a new number from Vodafone. That way we would have an extra phone when people come to visit. If I get a new number they'll give me the new phone quicker, right?

okey dokey--Thanks jer! Going to phone house to see what I can work out and I'll send you an email. Definitely prefer to go through you, rather than get a rastro-hack...

yeah, most of the places in the rastro as well as the small food stores run by the chinese these days do an imei (serial number) erase and can screw up your phone.
