I'm sure everyone has seen the big posters in the metro... El Pas is doing a literary series of "50 essential works of Spanish Literature." To kick it off today, they gave away "La Celestina" for free. For the rest of the series, the books will cost 1 Euro when you purchase El Pas.

There's some great stuff.

I can recommend firsthand the book that is coming out this Wednesday--El Lazarillo de Tormes. This is the first classic that most Spanish kids read in "colegio." It's a very important work, because it kicked off the "picaresque" novel genre and one of its chapters served as the inspiration for Don Quixote. On top of that its a great story, relatively easy to read, with lots of levels of meaning, social criticism, great characterizations, etc.

Good information mariposita!

I got El Pas by default yesterday when what I really wanted was El Mundo. I normally buy El Pas, but yesterday El Mundo was giving away a nice volume about Velasquez to kick off it's Spanish artists book series. Granted, these books are a bit more than a 1. I think each volume is around 14 and a new one comes out each week.

Sad to say, I got up too late to get El Mundo. I visited 4 kiosks including VIPS on c/Orense and they were all sold out of the paper by 1pm!

So, I have a the free copy of La Celestina and a copy of the European Constitution that came with El Pas yesterday! Smiler
